Ok so I've read several posts that we are able to open a bank account without a ssn. So I went to BOA today and was told by the rep that if I did not have a ssn then I would need a itin# or a valid visa inorder for my husband and I to open a joint bank account. Does anyone have any recommendation for me, I'm not sure what to do or do I just need to go to another bank.

Chase Bank opened an account for me and I am not even resident yet. I have checks and a Visa debit card. I have no social security number or visa and used my fiancées address with no problems.

Me and my wife successfully opened a joint account at BOA. They did not ask for any visa, just said to update our account as soon as she gets the SSN. She used her passport as ID. I am already a BOA customer, so maybe that made a difference, I don't know. But the process went very quickly and smoothly, they also issued a debit card for her. Maybe you should try another BOA branch if you're set on this bank. Good luck!

I have an RBC US account (joint with my wife, we also have a RBC Canada account which is how I pay my bills) since you live in Georgia, you could ask them, they are one of the southern states that still has an RBC US branch. However I OPENED my account from Canada and ACTIVATED it down here without a SSN, so I'm not completely positive on how they operate in different circumstances.

I was able to add my wife to my account without a SSN at a bank in the Atlanta area. Once she received her SSN, we updated the account. It depends on the bank.

Suntrust. They will have you complete a tax form for earned interest and explain why you don't have a SSN.

Go back to the bank,

ask for the supervisor,

attempting again,

and be certain to ask the Supervisor IF that rep received proper training on the Patriot Act.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Wow good to know. I will definitely check them out. My I ask though what did you use for ID?

I used my British passport, British Drivers licence, letter from HSBC here in the U.K dated two weeks previously and a bank statement from fiances account to prove address. They were really helpful and opened a checking and savings account. It was easier than opening a bank account in the UK lol.

Hope this helps.

I opened a non resident account with BoA back in 2010, when I was still going back and forth to visit my now husband. Just this past week, I went into a BoA branch in Arizona (while visiting relatives) and changed the account to my new married name and added my husband to the account. The new signature card was faxed to the branch nearest him in Michigan for signing, no problems at all. I also have a Visa debit card and cheques on the account.

I've found BoA client service to be very good.

Best of luck!

Namaste.

Check if TD Bank operates in Atlanta although I believe they do. I had a very good experience with TD Bank.

With TD Bank, I was able to not only open two joint accounts with my USC spouse but I also have my own account.

I was required to show my Canadian passport and a government ID issued by my province (drivers license or medicare card for Canadians).

I had to sign the W-8BEN form for the IRS.

The bank advised me to come back once I have my green card/SSN to update their records in order to remove the W-8BEN requirement.
