I am hoping somebody can please help.

I am not sure if this is bad luck or something worse.

I have had both my green card and re-entry permit go missing.. yet the post office tracker claims they mailed them. I am to call the post office but the USCIS hotline, while very sympathetic and said I had done all the right things claim they cannot help.

Any advice apart from forking out $1K in replacement fees?

This is crazy!

I would call the USCIS and ask for a Tier 2 human and inquiry about returned mail pieces. Once you determine that the mail was not returned, you return to your locall post office with the tracking infomation and ask them where the hell your mail is. Go to a supervisor and up to the postmaster for your area as this is crazy. It still amazes me that USCIS mails these important documents out regular mail with no signature required--at least now they are using tracking, but what good is it if it says it was delivered, but it goes into the wrong mailbox. At least with a signature you go to the postoffice and pick it up and if the first card gets mis-directed, there is at least one more.

You need to beat on the USPS to find where it was delivered. It may suddenly show up if you complain enough.

Good luck,

Dave

We have had a lot of mail go missing via USPS lately as they have been using a third party or just clueless, new people to do the deliveries and they either just deliver to the wrong address or it just happens to fall off the truck to save them from having to deliver it, we go days at times with no mail what so ever. I would get on the case of your local post office and chew the ear off the postmaster until they magically find your mail.
