Hi Guys,

I arrived on Saturday and just wanting to know what the next step is now we are together. What do we do about SSN? Should I get it before we get married? Experiences would be great. Thank you xxx

We got married first, then we got the SSN. I think we brought a copy of our marriage certificate to the Social Security office, but I can't remember if we needed it.

See if you can print out the I-94 form from the CBP website. Complete the SS-5 and take along your passport with the K-1 visa, the I-94 printout, and a second form of ID like a BC. I would apply in the name that is on the visa and go back and change it when the GC arrives so you can also get rid of the "VALID FOR WORK WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION ONLY" (this is assuming that you want to take your husband's last name). At this point the number is the most important thing. SSA employees are very poorly trained when it comes to K-1 visa holders and what they can and cannot do.

Good luck,

Dave

It is better get the ssn with your name before marriage.

after you apply for ssn and get it, then get marry,

Then wirh your marriage certificate go back to ss office and changes your name if you want take your husband name.

Many people here say that they have had problem to get ssn after marriage with k1.

So it is advised get it first the marriage

I got mine after getting married but opted to use my maiden name to avoid any (un)expected complications as we have read a lot of VJers' experiences in getting their SSN. We didn't encounter any issues. Planning to change it to my married name in the next few months.
