Nigeria puts population at 140 million

Associated Press

Nigeria's population has nearly doubled to an estimated 140 million people since the last count in 1991, according to census figures released Friday.

Population growth in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation, is currently running at 3.2 percent, said Samu'ila Danko Makama, chairman of the National Population Commission.

Four censuses have been aborted since independence from Britain in 1960 because of logistical difficulties and allegations that ethnic and religious groups had sought to inflate their numbers.

Such groups hold political sway in a country where the federal government controls regional distribution of funds from the oil industry in Africa's biggest crude producer.

Makama said detailed population figures, like state breakouts and average income, would be released within eight months.

Egypt, with about 80 million people, is Africa's second-most populous nation.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

Damn a nation of jackrabbits.

It reminds me of a guy I used to work with that had 6 kids...he bred his way into the poorhouse. Always complaining that he didn't make enough money.

Does the old adage, "if you can't feed 'em don't breed 'em" come to mind?

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

Maybe instead of sending financial aid, we should send condoms
