Can't think of any of my own right now but all the years I lived in the UK, these people that we knew wanted me to be the 'first foot' in their house every year cos I was not from there. Loling cos after Wiki'ing first foot, apparantly a female first foot is bad.

I got this tho from somewhere else:

A Tall, Dark Handsome Stranger

The first person to cross the threshold at Hogmanay brings all the luck, good or bad, for the year ahead. And, to follow in tradition they have to fulfil certain criteria.

They have to be male, tall, dark and handsome. They cannot be doctors, ministers or grave-diggers (!) - oh, and your first footer cannot have eyebrows that meet in the middle! If you do find a first footer that fits the bill (for remember, we Scots might be handsome but, as a race, we're not renowned for our height) then hang on to them - you could make a packet!

P.S. Being a First Footer is great because tradition dictates you can claim a kiss from every lady in the place! XXXXX!

I'm not particularly tall...5'6

I'm not dark....but to Brits I am, lol

'Handsome' would be used to describe a butch old lady with a mustache ...

Stranger? Not really but ok...I was a stranger in a lovingly xenophobic way

Male? nope

We have lentils... for prosperity

And 12 grapes at the strike of midnite and a wish for every grape you eat...

We walk around our block with suitcases so you travel next year...

And we hold money in our hand so we have enough of it next year also...

There are many more... but... I cant remember them all right now..

Oh... and my best friend told me to tie a yellow ribbon in my leg, so I could find a good man to love. I did it... and I found Rob...:)

We always did the First Footer custom growing up. My Dad was a welcome addition to the family - he was the only dark haired man in a family of blondes so when my Mom and he started dating he started 'first footing' for the family. He continued the custom after they were married, leaving the house shortly before midnight on New Year's Eve, then re-entering shortly after twelve:-). We also make sure if we ever go visiting others on New Year's Day that we bring a loaf of bread and a coin as gifts for the people we are visiting to ensure that their house enjoys abundance and prosperity throughout the new year.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

With all the internationals here- aren;t there any special good luck traditions?

A couple of years ago I was at a Colombian's house for New Years and we ran around teh block at midnight carrying suitcases for good luck.

What else?

Our traditions here in Philippines.

Food eaten on New Year's Day is said to affect the quality of the coming year.its a must to have 12 kinds of rounds fruits,it symbolizes wealth,we have 12 pcs of grapes hang on the windows and door- it hopes the new year would be sweet and prosperous.

Noodles for long life.

Fish for abundance.

Sticky rice for family closeness.

We scattered a lots of coins in every corner and make sure the pocket have some money in it for continous flow of cash/money.

We are wearing clothes with round/polka dots in it-symbolizes money also.

And since im not into firecrackers I''ll just have pots 'n' pans and turn the volume of my stereo to make noise to drive the bad spirit away! :P and definetely im wearing RED as a lucky color here

There..some of our traditions here..

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

On January 1st I start the year with a new One dollar bill in my pocket then on December 31st I spend that bill. The new bill to make sure I have money for the rest of the year.

I also eat a meal with black eyed peas and hog jowl (sounds gross tastes like bacon)

I also run all around inside the house then out side around the property and down the block banging pots and pans to chase the bad spirits away.

Then the family tells each other one good thing about each one for pleasant thought through the year.

Black eyed peas and collard greens. Peas for luck, the greens for money.

I have some for preventing bad luck as well...never take down the Christmas stuff til January 1st at the earliest. Never hang the new calender until the same date. I forget the exact reasoning I was told, but I adhere to the not hanging the new calender one.
