Cell Phone to use in Philippines

Hi - I'll be travelling from the US to the Philippines soon and understand that my US cell phone will not work once I am in Phils.

Can someone please tell me what kind of phone I will need? Does it require a special SIM card? Any specific reccomendations?

Your phone will work if it's not locked to a specific carrier. If it is, you can use any phone that isn't locked and just buy a sim card here. Don't buy at the airport, those are usually over overpriced. You can buy sim cards in telecom branches for about a dollar. You'll find those at the mall.

As long as your phone is capable of international calls you should be fine. It's your sim card or prepaid plan you should worry about because some providers need you to register to make IDD calls

You may have to have your phone unlocked fyi. Double check with your provider if your phone is locked or not.

OK, thanks. I've read elsewhere online that if your have an unlocked, quad-band, GMS phone you can make calls anywhere in the world, so am shopping for something reasonable.

yup. i have many of those.

what makes the difference in pricing is the carrier you choose and what the contract covers for usage out of the country the contract was originally designed to be used in (the contract, not the phone).

I was hoping I could just use my H20 SIM card in my new quad-band, GMS phone. Any reason why that wouldn't work?

Hello Tom...George from Plattsburgh,ny here...I will be heading to Philippines end of March...my question to you is...I use straight talk and was wondering if it will work in Philippines...I have to purchase a new card every month...thank you in advance for your time
