Reaction doesn't matter at all to the topic at hand, but I'd imagine folks would watch closely, take cover, or prepare to pull their own.

Since you seem to think gun ownership is what is causing the problem, what's your preferred COA?

You're assuming I think owning a gun is a problem. I never said it was. I think if you want to have one for protection, hunting, or sport, knock yourself out.

Regulation is needed. Folks with mental issues shouldn't have access to them. What's scary is there were quite a few stories last year about people with mental issues buying guns legally and then using them to kill people.

I used to think the opposition to tighter gun regulation was because of a sense of Patriotism and 2nd amendment rights. But the more I talk to these gun aficionados and read their posts here, it has become clear that their strong opposition is based solely in fear that they will eventually lose their precious guns because most of them will not be able to pass a mental health check.

If you live someone where there is little to no crime, and you need a gun to feel safe, even in your own house, you might have some issues.

We already have enough snitches here. devil.gif

The topic is the opinion on the matter offered by Detroit's police chief. So the question at hand is whether more guns would reduce crime in Detroit. The research suggests that more guns result in more - not less - gun violence.

Gary says otherwise. Check out Vermont crime stats.

So you are saying I should own a gun but am crazy to keep it in my home?. I have had 2 home invasions within 15 miles of where I live.... That might not be a lot of crime but it is an increase over many years ago. It is documented that at 2 AM it will take a LEO over an half an hour to arrive after a complaint. So who protects me if 3 or 4 thugs decide to "wander " around my house at 2 AM.?.... So I have "issues" because of the facts presented?... What is little to no crime?

We could as a whole, stop with our love affair with guns. It's easier to get a gun than it is to get a driver's license. Why do we have to have car insurance, have our medicine regulated, yet if you talk about gun registration, it's a problem?

Why do we have to have our medicine regulated, car insurance regulated, and undergo a background check to buy a weapon, show an ID to buy a beer

But somehow showing an ID to vote is evil, and going to keep millions of Americans from voting but not buying beer and getting benefits

somethings don't make sense right?

Before the stupidity starts I am all for back ground checks and think Obama did a good thing making mental background access easier.

I just don't get why the same people have such a problem with Voter Id

Mistype. I'm trying to do homework and respond at the the same time. Are you armed right now? Do you have a gun strapped to your person as you're typing this? That's what I meant. Folks that type while saying they have a pistol on them, even in the bathroom.

There's nothing wrong with having a gun/guns in your home, it's your choice. I just find it strange that the most paranoid folks on this forum live in areas(except NB) that aren't on the top ten most dangerous cities, yet can't leave their house without an array of guns to keep them safe. I live 10 minutes from the 2nd most dangerous city in the US right now, and I'm from the most dangerous city in the US, yet I've never felt compelled to have a gun.

I agree with that, 100%. But even limiting those with mental issues will not make much of a dent in the gun death statistic. How many deaths last year can be attributed to "mental people"? IDK, a few. A lot more than need be, for sure. But it wil lbe tough for ANY regulation to catch mental folks. I might buy a gun today, but "go postal" in 10 years. No way to limit my ownership.

It's far from an easy task to take guns out of the hands of the criminal or the mentally ill. I wish it were easier.

I think it's because the poor and disenfranchised will be most affected by it. I never had a problem with Voter ID, as most folks on here have said the same thing.

And that's the problem. It's easier to say there's nothing to be done, so folks will keep dying as long as others can keep their guns.

Crime can be reduced without guns. It can be done, it just takes that much more work. Look at places like Japan, their gun fatality rate in in the mid teens, and for them that's too much.

The bottom line is that guns aren't going to change in this country. People are too in love with them, cling to them too tightly, to ever have a logical conversation about them. They're in the constitution and are therefor untouchable. Who cares if the mentally ill have easy access to them? Who cares if they use them to slaughter a bunch of kids? It's sad, but not sad enough to want to CHANGE anything. Not about guns anyway. Everything else can be changed, just leave the guns untouched.

Put armed officers in all schools, movie theaters, malls, churches, etc. Make sure there isn't anywhere in this country that's not being protected by guns. Then pretend it's a free country and move on with your life. :)
