I am a bit confused about the whole POE and when it happens. I am planning on flying out of the Ottawa airport and into Dulles, Washington. I have a connecting flight in Toronto. Will I have to go through the POE in Toronto or can I go through it in Ottawa? I won't have time (probably) to do it in Toronto because there is only 45 min. between flights. Anyone have any answers or advice? Thanks!!

Pretty sure your POE has to be a US city.

No Canada has pre-clearance... Your POE will be Toronto, it would be better to have more than 45 mins between fights.

Yes, it will be toronto, and one wants ample time as I have made the Toronto to DC flight many times--and it always seemed the departure gate for DC was the furthest possible distance away. best of luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I am assuming you flew to YYZ Pearson? I am flying through YTZ, does that make a difference? It's such a tiny airport I'm not even sure if they will have customs?

Oh so what should I do? Will they do the immigration part in Ottawa then?

According to that link---a person would clear customs in the USA......Just like in Saskatoon---no USA immigration there--so one does it once you get to the USA........One could always call the airline your flying with and confirm.

Thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it! I called the airline (Porter Airline) and they confirmed I would go through immigration in DC. good.gif
