Consulate Review: Montreal, Canada
Review Topic: K1 Visa
Event Description
Review Date : November 14, 2013
Embassy Review : My Visa was approved yesterday! So just wanted to give a review of the process:
My fiance and I stayed at the Square Phillips Hotel which is just about a 5min walk to the consulate. Its a really nice hotel and the staff are excellent. The night we got to Montreal, we walked around to see where the consulate was and found it right away. There were signs on the door saying that visas were issued by appointment only and the windows were all shaded and you could see the security screening equipment at the top of some stairs right inside so we knew this was the right door. The Tim Hortons was really close too which was great!

We woke up the day of the interview at 5:30 am. I went over my documents one more time and was really nervous. I had two binders FULL of papers. I put all the papers into clear plastic compartments that I could slide the papers out of easily. I also used tabs so I could flip to where I needed to as quickly as possible. We checked our bags in a storage room downstairs so we could check out of our room in case we would be at the consulate for awhile. The staff at the Hotel were so nice about letting us check our bags and keep them safe for us while we were at the interview. We got our coffee at Tim Hortons at around 6:30 and then just walked casually over to the consulate to wait (it was really cold out with the wind chill so definitely dress warmly!) We got to the consulate around 6:40 and were first in line. Another couple showed up about 10 mins later. They barely spoke English and were older so most likely not there for a fiance visa :-). Another young girl showed up for the k1 and we chatted for a bit about visajourney and how much the site helped. Seems like this is always in the reviews. People meeting fellow visajourneyers We were let into the building finally at 7:30 when we could barely feel our faces and toes. They took my confirmation page with my appointment time and reference ID number and put a sticker on my passport with my reference ID written on it. They didn't even look at my fiance's passport or give him a second glance, just let us through to security. That really surprised me because he could have been a friend or Canadian citizen and they wouldn't have known! Not saying you should try to sneak in anybody, haha, but it seemed strange. So we went downstairs to the elevator and waited. Everyone else filed in slowly after us. After about 10 minutes a guard came down and let us into the elevator. My fiance and I were first on and first off the elevator and first in line. We got the C1 ticket!

We were then called over to a window to hand in my papers to the lady. All she asked for was my medical, 2 passport photos, birth certificate and a copy, affidavit of support and the most recent tax return transcript and police record. She also made sure our contact info was up to date and took my fingerprints. Then she asked me if I wanted to submit anything else. I asked if I should give her all the other papers (Ds-160 confirmation page, 156k, 156, all that) but she said "No, we already have those." I clarified with her that she didn't need an extra photo for the Ds-160 and she just shrugged and said "No we already have your photos". She was polite about it all and told us to wait until we were called for the interview. About 5 mins later C1 was called to window 7 which was down a little hallway towards the back in a more private area. The interviewer we had was extremely pleasant and kind and she was training a guy and so she told us this and said that she would be showing him the ropes. We said that was no problem at all. It was great because it really made the whole interview so much less scary! she would say things to him like "Now we have all of her documents here...we can go ahead and ask a few questions now" She gave me back my original birth certificate that the lady at the other window had taken from me. She then asked us where we had met and how much we were able to visit eachother. She then asked my fiance what he did for work and he said he was in the Marines. The guy who was training said "Happy Veterans day!" and the interviewer lady was like "Oh ya that's right! Thank you for your service, sir". Then they asked if we would have a big wedding and I said that we hoped people would show up and they both laughed at this. I then said that we had a date set for December and that we were getting married in Virginia and she was like "Great!" She then said that we were almost set, showed the guy she was training a few other things and then said "Congratulations guys, I am approving your visa." Then explained about the Loomis delivery etc and said we should hear from them in about a week, maybe a week and a half. It took in all about 5 mins! It was so easy and I couldn't believe that they didn't grill us more or take more papers from me! So we left the building at 8:50 am.
I think if you are well prepared and organized it will make a difference how well the interview goes. Also, if you can get your fiance to attend, do it! I know it says it isn't necessary but I got the feeling that him just being there made a huge difference, especially since proof of a relationship wasn't even mentioned. Cheers and goodluck to everyone who will be interviewing soon!

*Notice about estimates: The estimates are based off averages of other members recent experiences
(documented in their timelines) for the same benefit/petition/application at the same filing location.
Individual results may vary as every case is not always 'average'. Past performance does not necessarily
predict future results. The 'as early as date' may change over time based on current reported processing
times from members. There have historically been cases where a benefit/petition/application processing
briefly slows down or stops and this can not be predicted. Use these dates as reference only and do not
rely on them for planning. As always you should check the USCIS processing times to see if your application
is past due.
