Hello All!

I am a USC petitioning for my 15 yr old stepson. We have an approved I-130 and recently submitted an I-485 for adjustment of status. Today I got a letter in the mail stating, "Recently, you submitted an application for immigration benefits. That form was submitted with an extra remittance that is not required to process your application. Your check is being returned to you with this notice. No additional action by you is required at this time." They only sent the notice with the check stapled to it, a green form to include when the application is resubmitted, a copy of the form G-1145 I submitted, and a copy of the FedEx receipt from my application package. They did NOT send back my entire application- what does that mean?

I submitted a personal check made out to U.S. Department of Homeland Security for the amount of $1070 ($985 fee + $85 biometrics). I called the USCIS customer service line but they couldn't tell me anything other than that it doesn't make sense why it was rejected. I sent an email to lockboxsupport@dhs.gov but haven't heard back. Does anyone have experience with this?? What does it mean?

Thank you!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the letter state, you sent forms NOT required? Not that you are rejected?

That form was submitted with an extra remittance that is not required to process your application.

Remittance refers to the check. They think you overpaid and sent it back. It states that you do not have anything else to do at this time so I assume they are still processing your application and think you have paid twice.

Hi,

Thanks for your replies. When I called USCIS they implied that wording is typically in reference to overpaying or incorrectly writing out the check, but from what I can tell and from following the instructions, everything is correct. Which is why I am so confused! I think it is odd they didn't send back the entire application, which makes me think they didn't reject the I-485 application itself. However, I don't understand why they would continue to process our application for FREE...since they have now sent back the entire check to cover the fees. Could they really have made the mistake of thinking we already paid? That would be crazy!!

Yea it definitely didn't state it was rejected, only sent back forms that were not required and the cheque. But yea, I wouldnt go spend that money...hahahaa

Hello All!

Just wanted to give an update on what happened with our case. After spending many hours on the phone with USCIS (every time the Tier 2 rep would say, hm that's really weird) and sending multiple emails to lockbox support, we finally got an answer as to why our check was returned. Apparently the Chicago lockbox lost our I-485 application but managed to hang on to all other supporting documents. So, they just sent the check back. It was frustrating that they didn't actually write on the rejection letter that they were returning the check because the I-485 application was missing. It only said you paid too much. Last week we resubmitted only the I-485 with a check for $1070 as before, and were very excited to see they cashed the check today! Now we are waiting to see if everything moves on smoothly, or if they will send an RFE for all the other supporting documents we had already sent the first time. Wish us luck!

Hope it all works out smoothly for you all!
