Is Nikah Nama enough evidence to show marriage in India

My fiance and I are planning on getting married in India next month. He is an Indian citizen and I am an American citizen so we are going to apply for the I-130 and K3 visa. We are having our marriage performed in the Mosque in Hyderabad India in front of the Imam and having it Notarized by the Islamic Union. I would like to know if we have our marriage certificate registered by the Islamic board if this is sufficient evidence for the US Embassy to recognize that we are legally married in India. OR do we have to perform the Special Marriage Act along with the Nikah Nama? Will the Consulate recognize the Nikah Nama as a registered marriage certificate in India or do we have to register it at the registrar office for the state of India? I would appreciate if someone could help us out with information on this subject especially if someone has been through this recently themselves.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

September 1, 2011: NVC case number assigned
September 2, 2011: AOS invoice received, OPTIN email for EP sent
September 7, 2011: Paid AOS bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 9, 2011)
September 8, 2011: OPTIN email accepted, GZO number assigned
September 10, 2011: Emailed AOS package
September 12, 2011: IV bill invoiced
September 13, 2011: Paid IV bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 14, 2011)
September 14, 2011: Emailed IV package
October 3, 2011: Emailed checklist response (checklist generated due to typo on Form DS-230)

November 10, 2011: Interview - APPROVED!!!

January 28, 2014: Production of new Green Card ordered

February 3, 2014: New Green Card received; done with USCIS until fall of 2023*

December 18, 2023:  Filed I-90 to renew Green Card

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal

The Nikaahnaamah is not enough, you either need to get it registered under the Muslim Marriage Act or get the Special Marriage Act Waalaa (after my traditional marriage I did the later with my wife, be prepared for some pretty heavy bribes to the court and police though).

I am nost sure if you can get it registered under special marriage act, I could be wrong but as far as I was aware it was for ppl of different religion getting married.

If you both are muslim and getting married in mosque than you will have to take that certificate to the local registrar's office and get marriage registered. He would be issuing you a marrige certificate every city has its time some take a week some more or if you have connection same day :)

By the way there is no K3 anymore, so you will be applying for CR1.
