Hey all!

I like to have my ducks all lined up ahead of time. While I wait for my K1, I'm wondering what has been the cheapest way you moved to the USA is. I'm considering renting a U-Haul. U-Pack quote me almost $4000 which I refuse to do. I'll be moving to Atlanta.

Experiences?

Moving w/ 1 container through ABF U-Pack from Toronto to Arizona is costing us $3,000. It can be cheaper to pack a container yourself than a traditional moving company depending on what you are moving.

Why not drive a Uhaul? Or have your fiance come up and drive the truck and you drive your own vehicle unless you put it ona trailer?

I moved form the ON to VA (Georgia's just 'a little further' ;) )

My now husband flew up to Toronto on a Friday evening and we rented the Uhaul, packed it Sat/Sunday and started driving on Monday morning. It's normally a 9 hour drive but since we were driving slowly with a bigger load we did half one day and half the next so we arrived in VA. All 3 of us (hubs, me and my daughter) were in the front seat of the truck.

It was around $650-ish to rent the truck and gas was whatever it was (probably around $500?) but all told it was fairly cheap compared to other methods I investigated. We had no troubles with the truck breaking down and we were on major highways so if we'd had trouble it wouldn;t have been a big deal to call for help.

I moved from a large 2 bdrm apartment (and believe me I have a lot o stuff) and we fit into the size of truck which didn't require any special licenses (which was quite big).

Yeah, I was looking at U-Haul. $105 to rent for 3 days, and at $0.69/km that equals to about $966 and then gas is whatever. London, ON to Atlanta, GA is average 1400km and a two day drive, so we'd have hotel cost too.

I suggest you drive the companies are a rip off they gave me a quote then ended up saying that they misquote and refused to release my goods luckily their is a class law suit and can't wait together my cash back

Good point.

I'm also considering renting a SUV and hooking up a trailer too it, even cheaper! lol

You can go online at Uhail and get a quote------ rates I see are a lot different-----if you can rent it out of the USA--may be cheaper and then you have more options such as Penske. Back in 2004 I used Uhaul, was around $800 from Greenwood NS to DC. Only obtained around 10mpg--I had a 14 or 17 foot truck. Ensure you really check it over before you accept it.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

If you can find a rental company which is willing to let you drop off in the SUV in the US after rental in Canada that works. Make sure they're ok with you hooking up a trailer....a lot of rental vehicles won;t even have a hitch.

Honestly the Uhaul doesn't sound very expensive - you may just have to fork out or sell everything you own! I know thtat I brought a lot of ####### that I wish I'd just left back in Canada or given to my brothers or something. I insisted on bringing some household items which probably had sentimental value but a year later I was throughing them in the garbage in VA - :)

We live in Toronto and are moving to North Carolina and have looked into both U-Pack and one of those U-Haul U-box things. We have a one bedroom condo, with an average amount of stuff, so we're thinking it can fit into one cube. Our U-Pack quote was under $1,000 and the U-Haul was around $1,400. I wonder why yours was so much more expensive! Like someone else said though, maybe you can head across the border to rent a truck in order to get a better price.

Can you link me to the U-Pack site you used?

I just went to Upack.com and then filled out the little side bar to get a free quote. The quote they listed on the site was for the trailer space, but then I got an email with the trailer space, 1 ReloCube, and 2 ReloCube quotes along with the door to door price/terminal to terminal price. The terminal to terminal was much cheaper, so if you live close to the terminal location, I would consider that.

ABF U-pack is in Canada. That's what my husband is using and he is in Woodbridge. They offer 2 options: space on a trailer or the Relo-Cube. Both you have to pack yourself, don't be fooled even though a semi-truck is an option. Terminal-to-Terminal just means that they will not offer services to unload/pack it for you. That's extra. The Terminal-to-Terminal options still means that they will come to you so you can load your stuff. You do not have to take your stuff to their terminal.

ABF U-pack is dropping a Relo-Cube off in the morning at my husbands house, he and some friends are packing it up and then the Relo-Cube will be picked up that night. When it gets here to Arizona, we will be notified and just have to schedule a time for them to drop it off at our house, we will empty it and then they will come back and get it.

I moved my husband down to MN from Toronto.. we rented a U-haul trailer, as he didn't have much stuff. we alternated driving and just went straight through.. If you can sleep while riding, that's one way to cut down on some of the expenses.

We used a U-Haul trailer. My now husband and his mother drove up to get us. His truck was full and her car on top or the trailer, but we got it all in. U-pack was not available in Sault Ste. Marie, and other companies wanted as much as 7K

I do Wilmington, NC to Hamilton, ON in ~15 hours including the border (if I were closer to I-95 I'd offer a place to crash on to save on hotel costs).

If your USC fiance is coming to get you, have them pick up the U-Haul in Buffalo; seemed to be ~$200 cheaper than starting from Canada. The drop fees for most rental cars makes it less fun to take an SUV, minivan, or 15 passenger van (max out your space) from what I could find.

Check out Buffalo options for U-Haul, it was cheaper than when I looked in Canada.
