2x2 Photos for Naturalization Interview

My wife's naturalization interview is scheduled for Tuesday, and I found a line in the document checklist asking for two passport-style photos (2x2). It also said that the photos are not mandatory. What is the purpose of said photos?

NVC Journey (Concise Version; See Timeline for Full)
2009-08-10 : Filed I-130 for CR1

2010-05-28 : Flight & POE; 1st Day as LPR
2012-04-04 : Filed to Remove Conditions

2012-10-15 : Received 10-Year Green Card
2013-06-05 : Filed N-400 for Naturalization

2014-01-14 : Oath Ceremony

Hi.. when I went for my naturalization interview last 2012, I didn't have to bring extra photos.. 'coz my photos were already submitted when I first filed for naturalization.. But, it won't hurt just to bring extra photos, just to be sure.. Good Luck!

02/14/14: GOT MARRIED!

03/25/14: I-693 Vaccine Form Completed 04/15/14: AOS/EAD/AP packet mailed 04/21/14: NOA1 (Email) 04/25/14: NOA1 Hard Copy (Mail)

03/03/15: Inquiry sent (extended review) 07/07/14: EAD/AP Combo Card Received 04/03/15: 2nd inquiry 04/17/15: EAD/AP Renewal Request Sent

I just had my interview yesterday; the IO after looking at the pictures with the N400 recommended I got new ones so my case doesn't get delayed ....

You can always bring passport pictures with you and if you don't need them find a use for them when you apply for new passport :)
