A 73-year-old retired teacher was at home in Oakland Park, Fla. when a burglar smashed a window to gain access to the house. The homeowner retrieved a gun, went to investigate, and discovered the thief just outside the home, carrying a TV and attacking a neighbor intent on reporting the crime. The homeowner fired at the criminal, striking him several times and causing him to flee to a nearby getaway vehicle. A short time later, police found the getaway vehicle wrecked, with the thief still inside it, about a mile away.

The homeowner made clear to a local media outlet that he did not relish being forced to defend himself and his neighbor, but one of his friends offered effusive praise, stating, “Good for him; wonderful. I wish more people would do that. It’s ridiculous for people to break into homes and think they can get away with it.” The Broward County State Attorney’s Office may look into the shooting, but Broward County Sheriff’s Spokesman Mike Jachles indicated that charges were unlikely, telling reporters, “It appears this was a justifiable shooting... Every indication is that the homeowner was defending himself, his property and his neighbor from being attacked by the intruder.” The intruder faces charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling and grand theft.

Damn gun nutter shooting a poor thief stealing a tv. He should have given the guy some more things, maybe some cash, his car, etc. Another case proving that a gun is useless for home defense.

if it wasn't a flatscreen, the thief shoulda been paid for hauling it off.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

Some gun owners relish the thrill of the chase - the gun owner wasn't much good though, the thief lived to tell the tale, I was under the impression that good gun owners shoot to kill and always get their guy.

I know that the poster of these stories does not understand why these anecdotal stories tell us nothing significant about the usefulness or not of having guns in the home but I am sure they will keep being posted as 'proof' of the gun owner being essential to the modern US society sleeping safe in its beds. So be it, believe that this is how society should be, but I do not.

Depending on the situation, how badly was his neighbour 'attacked' or was it just an altercation? There is no indication that the thief was armed in any way. It wouldn't have taken much for two grown men to overpower one grown man and hold him for the police to process without resorting to actually shooting the guy. It doesn't make sense to just pop off a few shots to 'scare' him away if the idea is to try to prevent crime as apposed to simply acting on impulse.

I fully understand statistics and the fact one story does not a case make. The anti-gun fanatics that post stories also need to understand that fact.

That's the point though, we hear all this guff about how citizens should be armed and tackle criminals but we have a police force for a reason, and it's not because we want to live in a police state. The police are the trained force that specialises in, guess what? Detaining criminals prior to prosecution. That's how the modern society works. Why on earth do we want to step backwards into having individuals decide how to tackle criminals and often making a complete balls of it? I know, a typical liberal response, leave it to the professionals. What a stupid idea, we should all be our own policeman, doctor blah blah blah. I heard it all before, I still do not believe that's how we should want to live.

I rather think they do. It's clearly a form of VJ entertainment. Post as many gun stories as you can find.

I though you anti-gun fanatics tell us that we we should not approach or challenge people. Isn't that what TM was all about ?

The homeowners should not take that risk..If someone is breaking in your home or stealing your property, Then it is your right,,no duty to protect your home and property.

I am not going to risk challenging someone breaking in my home physically if I have a weapon..Why should I. It's my home and they are the criminal.
