Puny Chinese Internet brought to its knees by sophisticated distributed DoS attack

China's internet service was disrupted on Sunday as it was hit by the largest distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack ever seen in the country.

The China Internet Network Information Center (CINIC) reported that the state domain name system (DNS) node was targeted, knocking the nation's .cn domain offline on Sunday at around 2pm local time, and again at 4pm.

The huge attack on China’s network was noted as ‘ironic’ by Bill Brenner of network monitoring firm Akamai, which has frequently reported that the vast majority of DDoS attack traffic has come from China. “China is usually seen as the place where attacks begin,” he said.

The incident will no doubt have been watched with interest by those in the US, as the two nations accuse one another of underhand tactics to disrupt infrastructure.

Speaking of Akamai, you guys should check into those cats. There's a service that install with some programs called Akamai service or something. Sends out tons of information to IP's registered to government facilities. We noticed a few computers on our network blowing up our internet connection and traced it down to that program. Now i'll probably disappears.

i'll posit it was one of the junior programmers back in China, in the DoS pit, that flipped in the wrong stuff and ran it in production .
