I'm trying to gather up all my taxes for this filing. I'm filing the petition in August, but I'm trying to have everything complete to be on the ball.

I have my TurboTax transcripts for 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. I plan on using my 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 transcripts, and I'm using my Aunt as a joint sponsor (whom I'm assuming is also providing three years and W-2, or one year and a W-2..alongside an employment letter).

My problem is my 2010 tax .pdf has a Do Not File watermark, and I have no other copy. I would try requesting a transcript from the IRS but I've moved from that address. I'm out of the country so calling is quite the task to complete.

1. I'm wondering if using the Do Not File transcript would be ok? It's not my most recent return so it shouldn't be too much of an issue, right? I've also printed out all the worksheets...mistakenly.

2. Also, want to make sure that since I haven't worked in 2 years that not having W-2's is okay for me.

Thank you!

They send those to the address you lived at when you filed the return. I was at a different address for the year 2010.

Also, are you saying the 1040A that I have from TurboTax will not work? I need the transcript? It looks as though the 1040A from TurboTax has more than enough information.

No they don't.

It's your current address on file with the IRS.

You need your W2s to submit your old 1040s.

As well as any other packets submitted.

The 1040s would work fine, then, but your initial question was regarding them saying 'do not file' which idk i have no clue.

I always kept a copy of my turbo tax transcripts on my computer and they don't say do not file.

Maybe that's because you had electronic submission though (I did not) so that would be okay I would think.

Regardless, Idk why you just won't attempt to do the easy thing and get the return transcripts which everyone knows work.

If you don't want to, then submit the 1040s and see what happens.

I'm not trying to avoid the easy way.

Before I submitted my 2012 taxes I wasn't able to get the online form to work...Ironically, it seems to be working now. Not all of my TurboTax transcripts say Do not File, but weirdly the 2010 does.

I think you for your help. Sorry for any confusion. I'm doing this through DCF so I'm trying to minimize shipping costs from the US from Aunt and get everything ready.

The "do not file" on your Turbo tax prepared returns is so that you do not send them to the IRS. When you used Turbo Tax (or any other electronic filer such as HR Block), your copy will say "do not file" because you have already filed electronically through that company.

Not having W-2"s is not necessarily a killer, but you must be able to substantiate your income if you do not use the IRS tax transcripts. So what was your income and what was the source of that income ? Were you paid on a 1099-MISC as an independent contractor ? Then you must provide this instead of a W-2. If you lived off of bank interest, you would have a 1099-INT, of if you had dividend income you would have a 1099-DIV, etc. If you had withdrawals from a retirement account you would have a 1099R. If you had income from the sale of stocks, you would have a 1099B from your broker. Etc, Etc......you must documented your income.

So your choice is to send copies of the returns, even though they say "do not file", along with whatever 1099's and W-2's that you have for those years.

Or you can just send the IRS transcripts WITHOUT W-2's or 1099's. You do not need the W-2's or 1099's with transcripts as the IRS has that info on the transcript.

BTW, if you had no income for those years, why did you file ? This makes me think that you must have had some income which caused you to file, and depending on what type of income you had you should be sure that your return was done correctly.....i.e. if you had a 1099-MISC, then your return should include a schedule C and a schedule SE. I think that you should consult a tax professional if none of this is clear to you.

Well..I was wrong the electronic filing for 2012 did not get accepted. I was claimed a dependent on my ex's taxes, and when fixing that TurboTax wouldn't file it because "I'm below the minimum filing requirements."

I did not work and I made $0 for 2012. I was only trying to file so I would have some official IRS document for my wife to take to interview. I'm DCF filing, not sending anything in. My aunt is being a joint sponsor and I'm making sure she provides tax transcripts, w-2's and employment letter (she's worked at same place for 28 years and makes over the 125%).

I will take a letter stating I'm below the minimum filing requirements to file to the embassy when she has an interview.

You provided a lot fo great feedback an info...Thank you!

Jace,

I will bet that what actually happened on your 2012 attempt was that the IRS rejected your return because your SSN was already used on your ex's return to claim a dependency exemption. An ex could claiming you as a dependent is quite irregular and could only be done if you had lived the entire 12 months of 2012 with her, assuming that you were not married as of 12/31/2012. But that is not pertinent to our conversation here.

Yes, include a letter that you were not required to file because of the lack of income.

Good Luck, and I hope that your Aunt's income is sufficient.
