An attorney for the estranged wife of former pro wrestling star Ric Flair said Wednesday she still was awaiting more than $32,000 in support payments. Flair is under order from a North Carolina judge to make the payments or go to jail.

"He would purge himself of having to go to jail if he would pay the check, if he would pay in full the total amount he owes, up to date," said Brad Smith, attorney for Jacqueline Beems, Flair's fourth wife.

Flair, 64, told TheCharlotte Observer Tuesday that he planned to pay Beems on Wednesday.

"The reason I didn't pay … the 32 grand is because my son died and I was in the hospital for a month. I was in the hospital for a month with a blood clot. I didn't go to work for three months," said Flair, whose legal name, Richard Fliehr, appears on court documents.

In March, the body of his son, Reid Fliehr, 25, was found in a Charlotte, N.C., hotel room. The Mecklenburg County Medical Examiner later issued an autopsy report saying he died of a combination of heroin and prescription drugs, according to an Associated Press report.

On June 18, Ric Flair was found in civil contempt in Mecklenburg County court for failing to make payments of post separation support and attorneys' fees, as well as continuing payments for Beem's car lease, car insurance and health insurance.

"If defendant fails to purge his civil contempt … then he shall immediately turn himself in to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff and he shall remain in the custody of (the sheriff) until he pays all sums required," said the order.

The order for Flair's arrest was issued on July 3 for failure to comply with the June 18 order.

"He's just essentially defaulted and not paid any of that," said Smith, a Charlotte attorney.

Beems and Flair were married in Charlotte in 2009. They were separated in June of 2012. She filed for legal separation in December of 2012.

In February of 2010, police were called to the couple's home after a report of an altercation. Smith said he represented Beems in that matter and that charges brought against her by Flair for allegedly striking him were dropped due to lack of evidence.

More recently, Flair's current girlfriend, Wendy Barlow Kidder, accused Beems of making harassing phone calls, said Smith.

Smith said Beems turned herself in to authorities Tuesday in response to a summons on that matter and that she was released on an unsecured bond.

Smith said that under North Carolina law such claims of phone harassment can be made without an investigation. "There doesn't have to be any police involvement. There doesn't have to be any proof," said the attorney.

Flair told The Charlotte Observer that Kidder has 50 text messages and five voice mails from Beems.

Flair, a native of Tennessee, was known as "Nature Boy" during his wrestling career that began in the early 1970s and spanned four decades. He is recognized by various professional wrestling groups as a multi-time world champion.
