Can anyone help me on how to obtain a driver's license in GA.

I have check the DMV site for GA and I'm a little confuse.

Seems like I can apply for it with just a SSN (and other docs) and not the EAD or GC.

I'm certainly not in a rush but just wanted to prepare with the docs needed.

Besides, I'm still a little scared driving here... LOL

From what I read on the Georgia site you need more than that.

http://www.dds.ga.gov/drivers/Dldata.aspx?con=1740671758&ty=dl

Documents Required
  1. Documentation showing your identity, residential address, full social security number, and U.S. citizenship or proof of lawful presence in the United States. Click here for more information.
  2. Applicants new to Georgia must surrender any out-of-state driver's license/permit/ID card.
  3. If the applicant previously was issued a driver's license/permit/ID card in another state, and that card has been lost or stolen, the applicant must provide a certified copy of his or her driving record or motor vehicle report from the state that issued the card. The MVR must be dated within the last 30 days. The DDS does not accept uncertified copies printed from websites, but a fax may be sent to the DDS directly from the other state agency.
  4. Certificate of Attendance (DS-1) dated within the last 30 days or High School Diploma or GED.
  5. ADAP or eADAP certificate of completion.
  6. If Parent Teen Driving Guide was used to satisfy Joshua's Law "Behind the Wheel" requirement, the following is required: the session checklists; signed 40 hour Driving Log; and the Parent/Teen Driving Agreement.
  7. All documents must be in English and any foreign language documents must be translated to English. See the Translator List to locate an approved document translation company.

hi, i am a us citizen born in ga and lived here all of my life so im not sure if you need ssn and gc, etc. the one thing i can tell you because i found out the hard way, they now only accept originals of every document, birth certificate, marriage cert. proof of residence, etc. i had original of everything just TO RENEW my license except i had my short laminated birth certificate, and was waiting 6 hours that day in line. when it was my turn, they would not accept my birth certificate, and did not renew my license, so thats my advice. good luck. :)

mrsSpitze it's very cool you live in Cumming. That is were my parents and sister live. My sister owns a restaurant near North Forsyth High School. Small world. I'm up there often, but I live in Atlanta.

Sorry I'm not sure about the license. I think Hank is correct. Just make sure to look at the requirements for non-citizen.

DMV would not allow my wife to get her drivers license until she had her conditional green card. Drivers license expires same day as the green card expires. They also run your information through the SAVE database to verify legal presence.

That's no good news. Oh well... I guess we'll have to see.

It's a bit selfish for them to do that... I understand the work permit (EAD) requirement but the green card? Who knows when it will come. And when you work you need a car since public transportation is not really something abundant here... Oh well...

many people buy a small-engine moped, not need a license for the driving...

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

Every state is different, what Georgia does will be different then other states. Here in Arizona my wife applied for her driver's license with just her EAD, Arizona was just fine with that, and DMV tied the expiration date on the license to the expiration on the card.

Problem is, not many roads you can legally drive an electric golf cart on. Well, unless you live in Peachtree City haha. They have golf cart only streets and you have to register the cart with the city.

Georgia requires one of these:

Visa Waiver; also requires Unexpired Foreign Passport

Unexpired Foreign Passport with a valid US Visa and valid I-94 or I-797; also requires I-766, I-20, or DS -2019

I-766 (TPS - Temporary Protected Status)

I-766 (non TPS); also requires Unexpired Foreign Passport

I-551 or I-551 Stamp with photo on I-94 form

I-551 Stamp; also requires Unexpired Foreign Passport

I-94 (Asylee status)

I-94 (Refugee status)

Certificate of Citizenship

Certificate of Naturalization

Unexpired Foreign Passport with Immigration Status of A, B, E, H, I, L, O, P, Q, R, or S

Are any of those an EAD or something that a K1 holder would have while waiting for AOS?

Edit: I googled "I-766" and that is the EAD.

Sorry I couldn't edit my first response.

But I looked it up and it's illegal to drive a "low-speed vehicle" aka golf cart without a valid drivers license. That's a federal regulation. http://www.quovis.com/aboutlsv.htm see the last bullet point. Also, it can only be driven on roads with a 35 MPH speed limit or less. Interesting. I always though you could drive without license as well since its basically a 4 wheel moped.
