Hello Everyone! I'm brand new here and trying to wrap my head around the beginning of this process. I am engaged to a Canadian who I've had a long distance relationship with for 2 years. We would love to go the shortest route to get him here and DCF seems to be it. Are we able to apply for this instead of the K1 visa? He is coming to live in Rhode Island, he is currently in Calgary. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. I see the links throughout the topics and many are from 2006 so I wonder if they are out dated? Thank you in advance, Kindly, Lanie

Welcome to VJ Boosbear,

You may want to ask the moderator to move this to the Canadian sub forum. I may also be wrong about this but I believe that there is no DCF for Canadians. If you go into that subforum and do a search, you may be able to find more info.

DCF is not available for Canada

However CR1 is available if you would like to get married BEFORE immigrating to the USA.

First to clarify you were saying filing DCF instead of K1 maybe. DCF (which is not available for Canada) is for Direct Consular Filing. So those countries where it applies they would just be filing their forms at the consulate instead of mailing to the lock box.

You have to decide whether you want K1 Fiance' Visa or a CR1 Spousal Visa. Read the guides and than choose be prepared its 8 to 12 months about either way.

Thank you for moving to the proper place. I'm pretty confused and this is all brand new. So the CR1 isn't less time or less complicated? I would love to hear from those who have done the CR1, it seems so many do K1.

Thanks again!

Personally I liked doing the CR1. Granted I had to fly to Montreal for the interview but I'm happy that I get a green card right away. I can travel or work if I want to, right now. Looking at just immigration expenses (not travelling etc..) the CR1 is a cheaper visa. However if you live in Vancouver or BC actually, it's better to do the k1 route as the cost of flying to and from Montreal can be $$.

Thank you Niki! My fiancé is in Calgary so BC is closer, but still expensive to fly there. I like the idea of the CR1 also. Are we allowed to visit each other though until it's approved or can I just visit him in Canada, he can't come to the US? Thanks so much!!

Yep you can visit or he can visit, just like on a K1. I'm actually originally from Red Deer. :) We had a nice little wedding in BC May 2012. Waited until Oct 2012 to file the petition because my husband was looking for work so we also were looking at him moving to Canada extensively. But a little less than 8 months after we filed the petition, here I am in Denver! :D (Sent it away Oct 13, priority date of Oct 15, NOA1 on Oct 17... Interview was June 3, POE on June 10. )
