Veteran Sen. Lautenberg dies

(CNN) -- Sen. Frank Lautenberg, the New Jersey Democrat who served five terms in the U.S. Senate since 1982 and was the chamber's last surviving World War II veteran, died Monday of viral pneumonia, his office announced.

Lautenberg, 89, missed key Senate votes late last year during a weeks-long absence due to a cold that turned into what he called a "severe case of bronchitis with fluid in the chest."

He announced in a statement in February he would not seek re-election next year.

Lautenberg was first elected to the Senate in 1982 and won re-election twice. He did not seek re-election in 2000 when his third term expired, but was recruited to run again two years later after Democratic Sen. Robert Torricelli quit his re-election bid weeks before the polls opened amid reports of ethical issues. Lautenberg was then re-elected in 2008.

He was a member of the United States Army Signal Corps from 1942 to 1946, according to his biography.

Lautenberg served on the powerful Appropriations Committee, as well as on the Environment and Commerce committees in the Senate.

If Christie remains true to style, he will appoint a New Jersey Republican. Someone who usually doesn't like higher taxes but is always willing to make an exception for the right reasons, someone pro-choice and in favor of common sense firearms legislation.

But whoever he appoints will only be around till November. Cory Booker will win that seat in November.

Probably be a good choice actually. He has more experience than Obama did when he was elected Senator. Since Lautenberg was a Democrat, it would seem the fair thing to do. However, the nuts on the right will probably throw a fit.

He'll never get the nomination. He might as well have taken all those photos with Stalin rather than Obama. Until the republican party stops bowing the bible thumping gun nuts, (see McCain 2000) they can forget about winning the White House. Unless someone like Dukakis or Mondale gets nominated on the Democrat side.

Not all. If a Democrat died in office then the Gov should appoint a democrat. It should also work the other way around. I am not saying they should be forced to, it just seems the right thing to do.
