Yes. Fukcing the poor ends up fukcing us all. The poor spend a larger % of their earnings than the middle class do; the rich spend even less. In an economy driven in large part by consumer spending, keeping the poor spending becomes crucial.

Disregard...I was out of line.

In your words "Urban Myth" If they don't stick around and show commitment, they're not going to get stock options. That's the same for any company that I can think of. Somehow that's Walmart's fault? No one is forcing them to work there

Most companies tend to keep their staff around for more than 12 months. Employee stock purchase plans become a hell of a lot more meaningful in those places. I'd say it's Walmart's fault that they have such a ridiculously low retention rate. Whose fault would it be if not that of the employer?

I thought maybe Mr. Big Dog got himself a sock puppet. But alas Mr. Big Dog is intelligent. Wrong most of the time, but intelligent.

So it's Walmart's fault people don't want to work there? The place always seems packed with employees wearing their blue vests on the very rare occasion that I shop there.

Disclosure: I hate shopping at Walmart. I think Walmart sucks. That said, no one is forcing anyone to work there.

I understand that nobody is forced to work at Walmart - except maybe those that have to pick between the job at Walmart and being unemployed. But that's another discussion. To the other question, of course it is Walmart's fault that people don't want to work there. I've worked in places that rocked and I have worked in places that sucked and I have worked in places that fall somewhere in between. I left the places that sucked. Not because I'm lazy or because I don't want to work but because the places sucked. That's not my fault, is it? Seeing that there are two parties involved - me and the employer - it would seem that there's only one party left that is at fault. Now, had I been the only one that thought the place sucked, then that would probably be on me. Even if I was not the only one but in a minority of people that thought the place sucked I might be at fault. But when it's a clear majority of staffers hitting the door just as soon as they can, then that's a strong indication that the employer really, actually sucks. And 70% not making it even a year, that's a clear majority of staffers voting with their feet walking out that door singing Johnny Paycheck's famous song.

When Walmart drives all other stores in the area out of business then it becomes one of the few options.

Walmart pays a wage that no human could live off of. They stagger shifts to reduce full employment.

Costco is a company that pays well and has a highier retention rate. In most cases Costco is considered a job worth keeping. Not just because they pay more, they are just run ethically.

I'm sure sweatshops appeal to a lot of republican's I hear them defending Walmart all the time.

So Walmart sucks on pretty much all levels except maybe price. No argument from me there. I wonder why people keep going there for jobs?

People that have limited resources don't usually don't have the luxury of doing that if its the only place locally. Walmart has literally closed up entire downtowns in the Midwest. So much so that City's have enacted ordinances that prohibit Walmart’s in a certain radius of their downtown businesses.

Its cheap alright, but eventually we'll end up with a few huge chains and limited choice. It will also be unfortunately the main employer for many areas.

Thus keeping the employees bound to utilizing the lone employer and the 10% discount at the company store. It’s the new version of the coalmine town…but it’s a very clever version.

So what's your proposal to fix this Walmart problem?

So what's your proposal to fix this Walmart problem?

Like most grocery store chains allow the employees to unionize. Minimum wage is a poverty wage. More walmart workers use social services and are uninsured than any other large company. They are a drain on us as taxpayers. All because the company needs to make more billions at our expense. Making a couple more dollars per hour won't break their profit margin.

Yes, Walmart will make less profit at first...but they make billions in profit. There's no need to pass that along to their consumers when you make obscene profits like that.

It's not socialism, its actually far better for Walmart to have less turnover and dedicated employees. That alone will pay for any adjustment in labor costs. Retraining and unhappy employees have huge hidden costs.

But hey, I only do this online...what do I know? :)

Walmart suck on all levels. Their prices - which are not the lowest by any stretch - don't make up for that. At least not for me. Why do people keep going there for jobs? Because people keep leaving there and they have open positions to fill. That's not the case for many of their competitors where staff tends to stick around.

Well first of all they'll only be able to unionize in the anti-business non-right to work states.

All that you said above sounds nice. But there's no reason for Walmart to do any of that. Can you imagine them going to their shareholders and saying, "We're going to institute a bunch of policies that will cut profits, but it's the right thing to do" I wish I could somehow get advance knowledge of an announcement like that so I could short that stock, because it will tank.
