Jme,

As is often the case, 'it depends' applies. Many companies state up-front that they do not respond to candidates who they are not serious about after seeing the application, many state that they do not accept applications except in response to an announcement of a specific open position.

In either of these situations a followup is most likely useless. Time and effort is more usefully spent looking for other opportunities.

Yodrak

Just wondering what is the protocol and general time frame for contacting a company when you haven't recieved any response after submitting your resume. Hope that the poll works and made sense

Thanks

Ditto what Yodrak said. I will follow up only in situations where I know for a fact that a position is actually available and the hiring company actually intends to fill the position soon. As you can imagine, it is not very often that I know something like that for a fact.

I never follow up for only sending resume and not getting responds and I third what Yodrak said. On the other hand, if I get an interview, I will follow up on the day they said I would hear back from them.

I never followed up on resumes, I figured they'd call me if they wanted me. I would follow up on an interview after 7 days... unless they said they'd contact you by [x] date or they'll be conducting interviews til [x] date. Then in that case I'd give it a few days past that date before I called.

I'd follow up by whatever means of communication we were already using - i.e. if the employer e-mailed me to set up the interview, I'd also e-mail my thank you letter and e-mail my follow up. If the interviewer called me to schedule the interview I'd snail-mail the thank you letter and call the follow up. Sorta just following their lead.

I definately do think it'd help - it'd show that you're serious, and it'd help keep you in the forefront of their mind above everyone else that didn't do what you did.
