You would be told to get the appropriate treatment for the TB.... normally a course of antibiotics and then you would be tested again.... I dont belive the visa would be issued until you were given a clean bill of health....

do you think you have TB??? do you have the symptoms???

From what I read, they'll keep your petition on a hold until you get treatment. Check here:

Where are you from? Depending on the country you come from that shouldn't be such a big worry.

The 1st thing you should do is get medical help now. Worry about the visa later.

I was also very scared about this issue for my fiance. I was worried that he could possibly have it. But then I thought, he doesn't show any symptoms nor has he been willingly exposed to anyone believed to have it. It's best not to worry so much, (like I was). I mean, I don't know if he has it or what will happen since he has not gone to his interview, but remember that it has to be active tuberculosis. I believe, if you happen to have latent tb (you have tb causing bacteria in your body but you can't spread the disease to others), you will not be refused the visa. You will only be refused the visa if you happen to have active tb. Don't worry too much. I have never came across anyone on VJ who has been denied because of active tb, maybe it's not too common. Does anyone know of any VJ members who were refused a visa because of active tb?

Yes.. there was one individual from Ukraine who was denied a visa due to Active Tb. She had to wait until it was latent until she could be issued the visa.

My fiance and I worried like this that the medical would discover that he was HIV+. I mean, what a thing to find out at any time, but to find out so close to getting the visa... so he went off and got tested, came back negative, and we both felt much better. We just needed to clear our minds about it... and it's not like HIV has symptoms, unlike full-blown AIDS, so there was no way for us to know otherwise.

But with active TB, there's symptoms. And honestly, if you have active TB... you need treatment. It'd be a bad thing for you to go undiagnosed and untreated. So while it would stink for your visa to be delayed, would you want to move here and give active TB to your fiance? I don't think so. :) So if you do have active TB, get treated, then move here. But if you had active TB... I think you'd know it right now. ;)

Hello,

I reading through this forum and came accross your post. I work in radiology and have many years of experience diagnosing Active TB through chest radiographs. Please understand that inorder to FULLy diagnosis active TB from a chest radiograph the person would have to be well beyond the intial stages of TB. IF a person was in a advance stage of active TB you would have other obvious symptoms. Also I would like to add that the purpose of the chest radiograph is to access ACTIVE TB. A person can be a carrier to TB but not display signs of disease. To detect this you would need to be injected with a PPD.

so does it mean that we have to undergo tests now? no symptoms or diseases shown?would it mean that anybody could have that even if a person feels that he's healthy? im worried now. im over exposed to computer radiation...would that affects me?

First things u should do is relax :D .........If your not sick dont worry. Allow me to better explain. The purpose of the test if to find out if u have active TB meaning in a stage were the disease is spreadable to others through droplets when coughing or other forms of respiratory fluids. TB is a bateria the affects 1 st tissue in lungs. So when u get a chest ray the doctor will be breakdown on tissue and fluid build up which is a result of the bacteria. So if u can imagine it would take a some time for the bacteia to be "working on the tissue" in order for the affects to be manifest. If you where at this time u SHOULD be displaying OBVIOUS symptoms. Temperature, cough, sweating, etc. Aslo by being a "carrrier" this refers to a person being exposed to TB at some point in their life. This doesnt mean that he HAS TB but has been exposed to TB. to determine that a PPD test is done and once u have been exposed this test will always be postive but it nothing to worry about unless other test are done in conjuction to prove that the TB bacteria is active.

LAst month we had a person come into the hospital with a 101 fever pesistant coughing,...this patient look horrible...Cat scan showed patchy infiltrates and other signs compatable with TB...but a couple of weeks before that we had a walk in patient looked fine just had a bad cough...he was living in a house with several people that were sick..but this man himself looked fine..chest xrays didnt show anything gross..but bllod worked proved he had obvious bacterial infection prob comparable with TB. In both cases we had the Patent islolated and all medical health personel tested within the same day to week.

SO to sum up.....Dont worry unless u r feeling sick now..but if u beleive u have had a exposure to TB then go NOOWWWWWW for testing before it becomes advanced..once its advance..its harder to fight but still curable....its just easier intheintial stage......

Thanks hydrolus for the informative post on active tb. You make some of us feel better after reading your post. I was one of those VJ members who was worried about my fiance possibly having active tb. I didn't know too much about, so I looked up info on webmd. Anyway, I was just overly worried about my fiance being denied because of active tb. I am extremely paranoid and my fiance has never showed a single sign of tb, I was just scared because I hapen to know various people who all grew up in Mexico (but are now in the U.S.) and had received a positive reading on a tb skin test. Chest x-rays showed that neither of them had active tb though. Simply because my fiance happens to be from Mexico, I believed he could possibly have it. Let's just say that I worry too much. :D

I don't have too much to add beyond what has been stated above. You should get checked out and not worry about it. The US does allow refugees on class B1 and B2 visa waivers into the US. We screen them at the clinic that I work in for active disease.

If you have latent infection (positive ppd, negative chest x-ray), you are not infectious. You will neet preventative therapy of INH or Rifampin to prevent getting TB in the future. This is not a reason to deny your entry into the US.

If you have signs and symptoms of active TB disease, they may require you to complete therapy which is at least 6 months or more depending on where in the body TB is located and how sick you are.
