Hi everyone,

First of all - I believe I'm writing it in a right discussions column. I'm very sorry if I am not!

I stumbled upon a question for myself which I don't know answer for and I believe if I won't do it right it might turn in to a problem.

I do understand that going through the process I will have to provide my birth certificate which is actually not written on English. Of course, along with that document I will need to have a certified translation.

There's a question: Can I just ask for service of freelance translator or company who provide certified translation and it would be good enough for US authorities, OR - do I have to do this translation through authorities of the country I was born in?

Common sense is saying that second option would be best and solid - I will get a translation and whatever other papers to prove my birth certificate. The thing is about this one that they want me to go through a massive paper hassle just because of it - this is going to take time and much more money then the first choice.

I would highly appreciate any help with this. Thank you very much in advance!

Sorry, does it mean that I don't have to do a translation at all?

I misunderstood, I assumed you were already here in the US because you said "do I have to have it translated in the country I was born in?" It has to be translated by someone certified to do so, no matter where it is translated. Sorry for the misread innocent.gif

there's specific stuff to do if it's in Chinese, aye?

other than that, USCIS accepts almost anything for translation (anything = notarized, joe bob down the street, your neighbor, who/mever)

if

it contains the translator's attestation statement in the translation.

We've some examples of that here, but there's also examples of that on the USCIS website as well.

The Beneficiary's birth certificate is NOT gathered up at USCIS - but many people have gotten dinged for it when the casefile is sent to a local office, as a local office apparently uses different rules of adjudication.

So, the first time the birth certificate is to be asked for (of the beneficiary) is at NVC doc intake, on the IV/DS-230 submittal. If you've not filed anything yet - you have at least 6 months before this is even an issue.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.
