Dear Fellow,

I have been here in United States since 26th December on K-1 Fiancee Visa and still unable to get the Social Security Number. And as everybody knows, anybody is like a handicap without the social security out here in United States ? Moreover, for how longer the verification of documents can be there at Social Security's End ?

My question is that I have to apply for my AOS as a Permanent Resident. So would it be fine to apply for it without the Social Security Number ?

Moreover, I had to apply for University as well and they definitely require the Social Security Number, so what can I use in substitute of SSN, would it be A-Number or not ?

Adjustment of Status from K1 Visa.

You do not need a SSN to file for AOS. I would ask the University what to do as you do not have a SSN yet but will get one, hopefully, soon. I would write the SSA office lisited on their main website and explain your situation to them. Take their reply to the local office and get the card. Or you can go back in and apply again and note the names of the people you speak to and what happens so you can write the main SSA office. Go to the local office and re-apply as if you have never applied and if they cannot find you in the SAVE database using name, have them try A#.

You need to get busy about the SSN as yur window closes 2 weeks before the expiration date on the I-94, then you have to wait for the EAD or GC before getting a SSN. So do not let the SSA drag their feet as you need the SSN for University.

Good luck,

Dave

get into SSA office on Tuesday, ask for a lookup in SAVE database using A# and VISA name.

The clerk will tell if you any problem.

Have problem? Don't apply, retract the application, and get into the local CBP office and fix your arrival record - somethings wrong with your name or A# .

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.
