dowry and rental car question

What is normal in todays custom for dowry or gifts when you see the family and ask to marry their daughter? My uncle mentioned to me a dowry which I've never heard of until last night.

Also on an unrelated note, what are good cheap car rental companies in Manila?

A dowry is the money, goods, or estate that a woman brings to a marriage.[1] It contrasts with bride price, which is paid by the groom or his family to the bride's parents, and with dower, which is property given to the bride herself by the groom at the time of marriage. The same culture may simultaneously practice both dowry and bride price. Dowry is an ancient custom, and its existence may well predate records of it. Dowries continue to be expected in some parts of the world, mainly South Asia.

Rental car? Do yourself a favor and call a cab.

The family will usually tell you what is expected in terms of the dowry. This is something you will discuss during your visit. Every culture is a bit different in terms of expectations (i.e. E. Africa cows are typical but being an American, money serves the same).

You are expected to be everyone's emergency fund because you're the Kano and you have the money so it's your responsibility to redistribute your wealth.

Typical Filipino thinking! Let’s have our daughter marry a kano and we can milk him for all it’s worth.

Dowry means exactly as what Hank posted. However, it is often to use dowry to mean bride price.

I rented a car the first time I went to the Philippines 10 years ago and used Avis. Went back many times since and always used a taxi. In Manila area no need for a car rental. We hired a car for the day once just to travel to The amusement park an see a volcano and other places. You can find a taxi with in seconds of walking out of your hotel.

The taxi is for traveling outside Manila, I'll be scenic driving. In Manila I definitely take a cab. I was told what is customary by my fiance but had someone else tell me there might be a dowry so just wanted to check. I'm aware of the money getting sent back for family, I already told my fiance whatever she makes she can send it wherever she wants. I do not believe in Obama policies, spread the wealth doesn't work for spouses family either. Who wouldn't want a couple hundred extra dollars a month?

I've used Avis Chauffeur-drive. Avis also requires a mandatory tip to the guy that we rented the car from and the driver requires another mandatory tip as well. It was like extortion instead of tip. We opted to use our neighbor on our succeeding trips instead.
