Sorry if there is previously a thread on this, I tried searching. I don't have my AP yet (will probably start filing in the next week or so) but we'd like to go somewhere for Christmas. Can I go to Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands? We had a friend that said they consider it a domestic flight and don't even check your passport but I don't want to risk any complications? I'm not sure where to look but I want to make sure in case there's some small print that restricts us to just the US states.

Yes, it is domestic flight -- these are US territories.

(be careful of cruises to Alaska -- some stop in BC as port-of-call)

I did a search but the results I found were a couple years old and I wanted to make sure it was still valid for 2012 as flying restrictions and rules change all the time.

According to the responses in the forums, it sounds like people have done this and been successful. However, I just called the USCIS customer service and the woman I talked to said I have to wait for the AP.

Let's say that on your way to Guam or Puerto Rico and your plane experienced unexpected landing due to a mechanical issue at a foreign land. To come back to the USA, don't you need to have a passport.

I think if you must not go, then I would wait for AP before departing..

Except that the CBP website is WRONG about American Samoa, DO NOT go to American Samoa as you will be leaving the US if you do.
