Your father may qualify for this https://www.pcip.gov/. It's a health insurance for those with pre-existing conditions which in your father's case is prostate cancer. The insurance premium is very expensive compare to the one that you get from your workplace. You are looking at least around $500 for somebody in their 60s. It's only available until Dec. 31, 2013 and then after that you'll have to purchase health insurance through the exchange. But this is still better than not having insurance at all.

Please be advise that if your father has been diagnosised with prostrate cancer,then he should be invovle with some type of treatment plan right now. Yes cancer can be treatable, but he should be on a treatment or maintaince plan.

If that is not the case, than when he goes for his Medical, you will be asked to do more test than an average immagrate intent.

This is not necessarily true.

Today statistics has proven than the best treatment for "some" (especially in older patients) prostate cancer is no treatment only "watchful waiting." With older men, especially the frail elderly (75+) prostate cancer treatment, be it surgical, chemotherapy or radiation therapy often reduces the quality of life severely causing bladder/urinary leakage issues and other problems. Prostate cancer can be so slow growing that an older male may pass through life and die of other causes before the prostate cancer causes them significant problems. Thus in many older men the best treatment is simply watching and waiting, and then dealing with issues if and when they happen.

This being said, your father should have a diagnoses and a Practitioner's recommendation for watchful waiting, if not it would be wise to consult as all prostate cancers are not slow growing and as pointed out, treatement overseas is usually much less expensive.

Things change as time goes by, for instance the common PSA that many doctors still recommend is pointless in most patients and is no longer recommended. Also BSE (breast self examination) to the suprise of many is no longer recommended. It turned out that many women found benign problems such as cysts, became upset and concerned, and often over the wishes of their doctor essentially demanded a brush biopsy. Well, more significant problems occurred (infection) by the biopsy than positive results so USPSTF no longer recommends that doctors teach or advise female patients BSE.
