When you follow Captain's above instructions,over on the left hand side you will see a box that says 'storage- your messenger storage'. It will have a line below that, that will visually indicate how full your mailbox is and below that it will also have a percentage (eg. 23% of your quota) and the number of total messages you are allowed.

Above that it will show your 'Folders' listing them as new; my conversations, and drafts. The number next to 'my conversations' shows how many stored messages you have. The 'new' shows how many unread messages you have.
