Need some quick advice / document translation

My fiancee is arriving next Friday. I know we need to get a translation of her Birth Certificate for the Adjustment of Status paperwork, and I told her to get it done in her country because it is less expensive. She just emailed me and said all the translations are more expensive than she thought, and she just wants to get the "civil registry" translated now, and wait until she arrives here to do the birth certificate.

I don't recall seeing anywhere in the visa paperwork that says she needs a civil registry / registration to be translated.

What should I tell her to do here? She's waiting at home right now for her sister then they are going out to get the translation(s) done.

If she is English proficient, she can translate them herself. I have no clue what a civil registry is, but you don't need that for AOS.

I thought that the only thing we needed translated for AOS was her birth certificate, and I'm just now reading online that many people translate it themselves.

I'm about 50% proficient in spanish, my mom is about 75% proficient...in combination with all three of and the use of translator programs i'm sure we could get it nailed down 100%.

Am I correct though, that for her arrival, our marriage ceremony, and the AOS the only translated document we need is her birth certificate?

Okay, i just got off the phone with her and she's telling me that the birth certificate and civil registry are the exact same thing, and in her country they call them civil registries. It's confusing to me because for two years in conversation we've used the phrase "documento de naciamento" which means document of birth, and today she started using the phrase "registro civil". Sometimes colombians confuse me, lol. But i think we're all squared away now.

Though i am curious about the other question i asked. I'm double checking everything today, getting ready to call the clerk's office where we will marry, etc.

lol in Argentina, Registro Civil is the equivalent to a Court House.

It kind of depends on the requirements from your County, but yes... she would need her birth certificate translated for the wedding and AOS; and anyone who can translate from Spanish to English can do it

Isn't registro civil the same as birth certificate? Has the name of the child parents, and even the doctor who made the delivery, all this certified by the notary.

Yeah, if you read the other posts he added, you'll see he was told by his fiancee that it's the same as a BC

i can help you with the translation. However, you should know that all translation must be notarized and cannot be done by your or her.. it must be a third spanish/english speaker certified party. Let me know will be happy to help.

and they are correct. Civil Registry is the same as Birth certificate.

Find out if your document needs to be translated by a specific company so you can obtain a marriage certificate. Where I am from in New York I have 3 companies to choose from and if I do not get it translated at one of those companies they will not accept the document and I cannot obtain the marriage certificate. Just double check if there are any restrictions no need in paying for it to be translated twice.

Where I am from in New York I have 3 companies to choose from and if I do not get it translated at one of those companies they will not accept the document and I cannot obtain the marriage certificate. Just double check if there are any restrictions no need in paying for it to be translated twice.

THAT is outrageous! If USCIS accepts documents translated by ourselves.. why would a County Court House request to have it done by either one of 3 companies? If I were you, I would marry at the next door County.

Your situation seems to be an exception to the rule of translating your own documents.

Yup tell me about it. Apparently we cannot get the marriage certificate unless all of his documents are translated by a certain company. And as you can imagine these companies aren't cheap. So I am pretty upset about it. But I guess its just something I have to do. And the only reason why I found out about this was bc I happen to work right next door and just stopped in to ask. lol

Yeah tell me about it! But thank you for the idea about going somewhere else I didn't even think of it. Its a great idea. I mean a bit of a hassle but hey each translated page is $80 and I have to get his birth certificate and divorce certificate translated. And I bet his divorce certificate is a few pages long. I am calling up all the nearby towns and seeing what their policies are. Because even if I can have it translated by anyone as long as its notarized I can do that since my sister works with a bilingual notary who told me she would stamp and seal whatever I need for free. I hope I find somewhere else!

That's a lot for something that's completely free otherwise. I hope you can find a better place.. if not remember these two words.... LAS VEGAS
