(CNN) -- Two law enforcement officers died and two were wounded in a series of apparently linked shootings early Thursday in LaPlace, Louisiana, authorities said.

The first shooting happened in a parking lot at a steel plant, Sheriff Mike Tregre said. The second happened when officers went to a nearby trailer park to investigate the first shooting and were ambushed by a man armed with what the sheriff described as an assault rifle, he said.

In addition to the two wounded law enforcement officers, some of the five people taken into custody also suffered gunshot wounds, Tregre said. Investigators were still sorting out what role those detained may have had in the shootings, he said.

One of the wounded officers -- whom the sheriff identified as Deputy Scott Boyington -- was shot in the shoulder and is expected to survive, a law enforcement source in Louisiana told CNN. Boyington is awake and talking at University Hospital in New Orleans, according to the source, who was not authorized to speak on the record.

One of the wounded suspects suffered life-threatening wounds but was expected to survive after treatment at the same hospital, according to the source.

Louisiana State Police have taken over the investigation, Tregre said. Although investigators are still working what he described as a "semi-hot scene," they do not believe anyone else involved in the shooting is at large, he said.

Tregre identified the dead as Deputies Brandon Neilsen, 34, and Jeremy Triche, 28.

The shootings unfolded around 5 a.m. in the parking lot at the Bayout Steel Plant in LaPlace, about 25 miles west of New Orleans, when a man opened fire on a law enforcement officer working a traffic detail in the lot.

Despite being shot multiple times, the officer was able to describe the suspect to dispatchers, Tregre said. That description, along with a civilian report of a speeding car, led responding officers to a nearby trailer park, he said.

As the deputies were questioning two people, a man came outside and "ambushed my two officers," Tregre said.

Authorities were investigating whether the same weapon was used at both shooting sites, Tregre said.

We need more guns and more ammo. All this gun violence happens only because there aren't enough guns out there yet. Really! Buy Ammo!

Especially hallow point bullets - that would stop the crime.

More and more such incidents are happening as lot of ppl have lost faith in the government.

Economy is in worst shape ever, corporation are raking in huge profit yet ppl are left without jobs, present govt is more focused in socialism etc.

Don't blame gun or Ammo look at the root cause of the situation.

Guns don't kill people but they do help. And indeed people are hopeless and restless. It will get even worse.

This happens every day here, it is only news because of the cops. As I told you before, Louisiana has as many shootings as Illinois and has a far smaller population. It is killing season here, aka summer.

Why do you always bring this up? You don't know what you're talking about.

Yes, keep blaming the economy if it makes you feel better.

The shooter is to blame here. Like in every case of some idiot with a gun opening fire. Blame him.

I suppose this is a result of the "economy" too.

Marrero, La. - A 16-year-old student at Higgins High School was arrested on Wednesday for bringing a loaded semi-automatic gun to school.

Rarely have I seen someone contradict himself in such a short sentence.

He tends to get lost in whatever argument he's trying to make at the moment and it doesn't end up making much sense in the end.

If he knew anything about Louisiana, he would know that is the least of their worries. How about living a state riddled with corruption, both police and government. What about the state of emergency in the area? Sean Payton? Boil water advisories? I could go on and on... These are far more important.

Like you know giving the free medical care and giving them iphone is going to stop such incidents?

Take a look at reality….. thousands of ppl out there feel that present administration has not done anything they promised 4 yrs back and instead push ppl even in worst situation.

If you prefer to be holed up in your made up world and refuse to look at reality that’s your call.
