(CBS News) After a brief respite from talk of Mitt Romney's tax returns, the issue is back in the spotlight after an interview with Ann Romney, who insists that "there's going to be no more tax releases given" by her husband in the lead-up to November's election.

Romney, speaking with NBC's Natalie Morales in an interview set to air Thursday night, said "there's nothing we're hiding" with regard to the couple's finances, but that unveiling a more extensive record of their tax history would "only give [Democrats] more ammunition."

"We have been very transparent to what's legally required of us," she said. "There's going to be no more tax releases given."

...

Mrs. Romney emphasized to NBC that much of the couple's wealth has been in a blind trust since her husband was elected governor of Massachusetts in 2002.

"It's been managed by a blind trust since before Mitt was governor, you know, 2002 forward," she said. "And so, you know, I'll be curious to see what's in there too."

Interesting that the VP candidates all had to submit more than 2 years worth of tax returns to Romney. Romney also submitted more than 2 years - much more - to McCain back in 2008. So, obviously he feels that vetting a VP candidate takes more than 2 years worth of tax returns. But vetting a candidate for President does not. He's such a tool. He's got something politically very damaging in these tax returns, that's for sure. And his wife knows it.

 Oh. Okay.

I know, right? If there's nothing they are hiding, then what ammunition is she talking about?

Did the Romney's avail themselves of the one-time tax amnesty to come clean on their Swiss bank account? I'm banking on exactly that scenario. It would explain why they've so stubbornly held out amidst increasing pressure to release more records. The amnesty would get them off the hook legally, but politically it would be poison.

The tax returns may contain evidence that the Romney's were forgiven for a felony.

You got it. It's either that he paid ridiculously low taxes like a buck fifty on $25 million worth of income. Don't think that would sit well with many ordinary folk in America. Sure the teabagger doormats for billionaires would cheer but who gives a ** about them anyway? Or he has indeed taken advantage of a tax amnesty for his offshore accounts - again, that wouldn't make him any more popular with the electorate. Could be other stuff but what is impossible is that there is nothing provocative in his tax returns.

They are not releasing them in an effort to piss liberals off - SUCCESS.

Nobody else cares.

Nobody cares but liberals? If that was true, Romney would be toast. You know, seeing that those who care outnumber those who don't so significantly. Never realized just how liberal a country the USA is.

In the poll, those surveyed:

Agree by a substantial margin of 17 percentage points that Romney in particular should release more than two years of returns. By 54%-37%, they say Romney should release tax returns from additional years. Those calling for more disclosure include 75% of Democrats, 53% of independents and 30% of Republicans.

I wonder what the birthers would have to say about this.

Nothing. Romney can stand there in London telling the world that he is a 'guy from Britain" and they won't even notice. Can you imagine Obama standing in Nairobi telling the world that he's a guy from Kenya? They'd be on fire before he would have finished that sentence. No, no - Romney has a free pass with this crowd. They'll start hating him only after he slaps them with more taxes and takes away their big gubmint goodies. Until then, at least he's a white man.

My question was a rhetorical one in contrast. The folks calling for Romney's taxes sound as bad as the birthers calling for Obama's birth certificate.

I don't think so. Obama's birth certificate was out there all along. Some lunatics chose to publicly wonder about its authenticity. That was crazy. There was always a comfortable majority of Americans that had no doubt that Obama was born in US and as such eligible to be President. The birthers were always a fringe element.

But where are the tax returns? A majority of voters believe that Romney ought to release them. Not some fringe element but the majority of the electorate. Don't think you'll have any issues around questioning their authenticity. The issue is that Romney is hiding them and whatever it in them.
