our case is being processed at NVC. when should my husband get his medical done??

You'll have to wait until your case is closed and an interview date has been scheduled as you need the interview letter for the medical.

Moved from IR-1/CR-1 Process & Procedures to India regional forum; countries differ as to how soon the medical examination can be conducted which makes the OP's question country specific.

You need to wait until you get an interview date assigned. Hospitals associated to Mumbai consulate have started to get liberal about interview letter. Earlier they were asking for actual interview letter sent by Mumbai Consulate but recently I have seen them accepting NVC email interview letter to get medical exams done.
