IMHO family planning goes beyond the use of contraceptives and abortion. Family planning includes making sure you have the financial and emotional wherewithal to see through a pregnancy, plan for all complications, and be financially secure that you will be able to provide accordingly to your family and also have a savings plan for college, for your kid.

In this case however, the OP has a newborn in his family so it would be useless to discuss what he should/could have done. Hindsight is 20/20. Judging him would be equally useless and crass, IMHO.

The issue is a non-issue, really. He can work out a payment plan and pay off his medical bills over time.

Maybe the question should also be why US taxpayers have to pay for your personal choices you made when you can't afford them?

Why pay? Hospitals and the entire system gonna bill WHOM when illegal immigrants and low-income USC come to emergency rooms for medical services?

OP, you ARE A USC and paid taxes. Time to exercise your citizen's benefits!

I don't think however that the OP is trying to find a way to toss the bill. My understanding is that he was worried that somehow someone might presume his wife claimed to be a US citizen, falsely.

In addition he wanted to know what to do about the bill.

I believe both issues have been addressed by many posters.

It is your responsibility, you agreed to that in your application with USCIS. Work out a payment plan and get insurance for your family, good luck.

Way OT, but Pres Obama raised his right hand to protect the law but he recently decided to let "illegal immigrants" become "legal" ones. The OP's wife is a LEGAL resident. If the system doesn't play its rule, why should the OP?

It covers MEDICAL BILLS, not government debt. If he owed these bills to the hospitals it would. These are not medical bills anymore. They have been paid already by the government. This is now government bill. Do you see he difference?

For example, what you owe in terms of tuition to school is school bill, covered by bankruptcy. Once you take Federal Stafford or Perkins loan it becomes government debt NOT covered by bankruptcy.

Similar example: if you pay your taxes with the credit card it IS covered by bankruptcy since you owe to the bank. However, if you owe taxes directly, it is not.

It all depends on the sub-chapter you choose, how you owe that debt to federal gov, your financial condition, hardship etc...

If you paid your taxes with credit card and the trustee or the creditor is able to prove. then you gotta pay that debt.

From what I have observed even those with a strong character find it weakened over time by a pernicious system.

I agree 100% but I reserve the right to encourage them to do the right thing, especially in a cut and dry situation like finances. I refuse to accept any justification or excuse to walk away from personal responsibility.

family planning may be wonderful. hell, i might be on the board of directors.

but considering my question, family planning is as useful an answer as suggesting "don't fall in love with a foreigner."

i was very careful in making my question about what to do at the moment the is realized after arriving in the US.

as many have said, we can't undo the past.

so, with that in mind (or reminded), what advice do folks have?
