Dear VJ members:

I am writing to ask for relevant sources of verifying the starting date of a period of one year indicated in one-year extension letter (I-797). I am asking this question because of my failure to convince Maryland Motor Vehicle administrators of the expiring date of my one-year extension letter. I passed a driving skills test yesterday (this was GREAT!), and the administrators set the date of my driver’s license expiring date on March 20, 2013, which is one year after the Receipt Date of I-797. I insisted that the license expiring date should be June 10, 2013 since my conditional green card expiring date was June 10, 2012, and that March 20 was the date when my renewal application was received and that the USCIS issued my I-797. I also emphasized that one year extension letter states that “Your conditional resident status is extended for a period of one year” and that the date my status expiring date was June 10, 2012 and not March 20, 2012. While this seems obvious to me, I was unable to change their assertion.

I am going to contest the Maryland Motor Vehicle since I assume that the Receipt Date is irrelevant as the expiring date of my conditional resident status and that one-year extension letter adds 365 days from the expiring date of my conditional green card. I would really appreciate it if anybody knows any references to verify the duration of one-year letter. I would also appreciate any advice on handling this situation.

I know this was not a problem IF I would receive a 10-year card by March 20th, 2013. However, I would like to know how to deal with this kind of issue in case I might face the same situation in the future. I am a VSC filer, and I know they are slow! Thanks for reading and your assistance as always.

In my opinion, the MVA are very ignorant of all these obvious facts. Extention kicks in when the card expires as you are not required to carry the letter around until the expiration on the card. I will suggest you just keep your licence as given with the date; when you go back with your 10 year green card, they will pro-rata the cost and you only pay the balance for a 5 yr licence. Happened to me before I got conditional green card. (same MD).

Patience is virtue needed by all, so folks always pray and be patient! Goodluck all!

I would go to an INFOPASS after your card has expired or even now and ask for a GC stamp. It should have the PROPER expiry date which should fix the problem.
