My husband will be entering the US on his cr-1 visa. Tickets from Japan to the US are so expensive right now, but we just found out it's actually a little cheaper if we fly to Hawaii and then we could stay a couple days and then fly from Hawaii to LA after our tropical pit stop. But would he encounter any problems if we do this? I assume we wouldn't and we'd only have to go through immigration once in Honolulu, right?

Also, what happens when you enter the US on the cr-1 visa. They just check your passport and say "welcome" and that's it?

No problem at all. You go through POE in Honolulu and that's that, you're on vacation!

They'll most likely just check his passport, sometimes they might ask some general questions, but usually not like at the embassy or anything. They'll go through the documents and say "welcome to the US!" You can read reviews for the different POEs, including Honolulu, on this site, just click Embassy/USCIS & POE on the top here.

Sounds like a great idea, a few days holiday together! No problem with it.

At POE, he will have his fingerprints taken again and they take his brown envelope. Sometimes they ask a few questions, such as verifying the address to send the greencard through is still correct. It's very fast- we were done before our lugage was on the carousel.

Don't forget to bring the sealed brown envelope in the carry-on luggage.
