Hi all, getting ready for our interview on July 16 finally! Had a question for anyone who has brought their vehicle across the border. I'm unclear if I have to import it or not. Il be continuing to cross the border for work and was hoping to just keep my Canadian insurance and plates. Doesn't seem like an option from what Ive researched. I'm not the original owner of my 2006 Dakota, any idea how to go about starting this process? I think I have to contact the manufacturer , little worried if customs wants a vehicle history report as alot of the body was replaced after a tornado squashed it. Anyone gone through this? Who do I contact about this?

Thanks for the help!!

Don't know that I have the answers you need, depends on the state really. Go to the Motor Vehicle website. If it hasn't been classified as "totalled" by an insurance company then you just need a local garage to do a Safety Inspection on it. BUT, if it was classified as totalled you will need to do a Salvage Inspection, and those are only done in a few places in a state. Where that is done will be listed on the DMV website for the state.

You will need one or the other of those inspections in order to get insurance on the vehicle.

NOTE: you do have a specific time frame you need to be aware of. Do it all within that time frame and you probably can avoid being tested as a driver, etc.

One day at a time and pray like crazy!

You are allowed to bring it into the state on a temporary basis and keep your Canadian plates and insurance.

I am a USC and had my vehicles in Canada for a few years and never a problem. I even tried to import my vehicle. After going through the US export procedure, I proceeded to the Canadian side only to be told by the CBSA officer that I "don't need to import my vehicle into Canada. Americans bring their vehicles temporarily into Canada all the time...." So I never did. I suspect this is the same going the other direction. I know retired Canadians who are spending winters in the US who never change their plates and then go home at the end of winter.

Depending on what state you're headed to, you generally are expected to transfer the plate and title into the new state within 30 days of MOVING there. My experience, this is not strictly enforced. As long as the auto insurance back home covers it, you should probably be OK. But there is the expectation that you will transfer the vehicle registration into the state.

In order to transfer the registration into the state, you will need to import the vehicle. There are lots of web sites that explain how to do this. You can do it all and the paperwork ourself and save $.

As for when you head for your initial entry to the border with your stuff, you are OK just driving the car in with your Canadian insurance and plates.

Saving $ on import duties, on the other hand, is an entirely different matter. If you want to import the vehicle using any new-arrival exemptions available, you may have to import the vehicle on the day you are driving in or within 30 days. In that case, you'd need to get your documents together. If that is the case, then I'd start gathering now.

Thank you for the replies I appreciate the help. I'm going to have Eric stop in at the border on his way back. There was something said about having to have it to us standards so I may have to get the safety done over in Michigan anyways. Thanks and have a good day!

When you pick up your passport after the Visa is printed in it there will be a letter explaining how to import all your possessions.

In order to import your vehicle you need to prove you own it and a letter from Dodge/Chrysler showing it meets the US EPA guidelines. Look on the driver side door frame or under the hood for an EPA sticker, with the sticker you do not need the letter. With out sticker/letter they will not allow you to import the truck. You can still take it with you, Because you are moving under an immigrant visa, you have up to one year to import the vehicle or take it back to Canada. You would not legally be able to sell the vehicle in the US.

Customs doesn't care if the vehicle has been through a tornado. But the state of Michigan and the insurance company there does.

It depends on the state whether they allow 'salvaged' vehicles to be titled. Some states, like Tennessee do, but they have to be inspected by the state police before being issued a title. Most insurance companies in the US will NOT insure a salvaged vehicle, you will have to look into that.

As for keeping your Canadian tags, yes you can, but you're a legal resident of Michigan. If you ever get pulled over and there's a time limit on how long you have to get Michigan tags, the police officer can give you a ticket for non-compliance.

Yes, temporarily.

Moving to the US on a CR/IR-1 visa the immigrant can import all their possessions, even vehicles, duty free for up to one year after arrival. She will only pay a $6.00 processing fee.

Believe one has up to 10 yrs to bring over their Cdn possessions.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Hopefully u can get that letter. A few posters on here said the manufacturer would NOT issue the compliance letter. Not sure why not.
