Long Form Birth Certificate

Hi.

I was looking through the guides and noticed that NVC will eventually require my certified (long form) birth certificate. I also noticed that I will need it for the interview. Does this mean that I will need two long form brith certificates for the IR-1 process? Service Ontario seems to only allow me to order one. Maybe I'll need to order a replacement for the interview? Or will NVC send my birth certificate back so I can bring it to the interview?

No, you send your long form to NVC and they pass it on to the consulate in Montreal. You only need one

This is true if electronic processing is not done. If electronic processing is chosen, then a scanned version of the birth certificate is sent to NVC with the original/certified copy then being brought to the interview. Either way though, only one birth certificate is needed in this process.

This clears it up for me. So I can scan the originals of all of my documents and send them to NVC, and then just make sure to bring the originals when I go to my interview.

Really? I didnt know copies of the birth certificate could be sent to NVC. I thought it had to be original form. So all will be fine if I submit the original & then request it back at the interview?

You send either originals or CERTIFIED copies to NVC. Not just regular photocopies. The certified copies have to come from the issuing agency in your country for birth certificates.

But yes, after you submit originals/certified copies of certificates to NVC, they'll be returned back at the time of the interview. To get them back though, you need to include regular photocopies to NVC in addition to the originals/certified copies. They'll keep the photocopies for their records.

I can choose to things electronically (scan) or physically (mail).

If I choose to do things electronically, then I can scan the originals and send the scanned versions electronically to NVC. I then bring the original docs to the interview.

If I choose to do things physically, then I must send the originals (keep photocopies on hand) and they will be returned at my interview as long as I bring the photocopies I took before sending the originals out.

Everything's correct except the last line. If you don't do electronic and do things physically instead, in addition to the originals, you send photocopies as well with them. Giving the photocopies then will ensure you get your originals back at the interview.

I would rather do this. Sounds a lot easier, quicker, and safer than sending original documents via some courier service.

I definitely suggest EP for those reasons It's also free to send emails

If you do decide to do EP, I highly suggest you read the wiki I wrote for the NVC process for Canadians. It's linked in my signature below
