...About the ice cream. How about the fact that we(US) have considerably more choices to choose from, but we don't have some of that good Ube readily available. :(

Yeah, I really liked the Ube ice cream myself. But the plant is considered invasive here, so I can't grow a crop at home to make my own. Bummer. Nothing like purple ice cream with some Utap cookies.

May your visa journey be smooth and speedy.

 Doesn't bother me. I worked as a server in a restaurant once, and I remember the employer telling me to greet people with happy holidays rather than Merry Christmas, but I celebrate Christmas. If I am going to greet, I will greet a Merry Christmas. It doesn't have to be merry if they don't want it to be. These things are trivial to me. About the ice cream. How about the fact that we(US) have considerably more choices to choose from, but we don't have some of that good Ube readily available. :(

Hmmmmm..... Hahahaha.... my husband likes Ube flavored ice cream too. :D

I am looking into it myself. I know that there is powder. Apparently, you can get the purple yam as a grounded powder to use for ice cream and such. I recall seeing this in an Ube ice cream recipe a while back. I am going to contact some nearby Filipino establishments soon to find out more about it or if they carry it. It would certainly be wonderful if I can find it.

Our Walmart has Magnolia ube ice cream, but it sells out real fast. Also they sell Otep cookies.

Jeez! How lucky Hawaii and California as they get most Filipino stuffs pretty easy. Even the Philippine mango! They got it. Hope they share some to midwest. :P

The Filipino store here in San Antonio carries the ice cream too. It was a little moment of happiness we we noticed it in the freezer. :D

When we're growing up, ice cream was a real treat. we have those during birthdays and on other special occasions. my dad or mom buy us ice cream. there's no credit from where i'm from. everything should be paid with cash. here in the US, my husband and I are crazy with haggen daz mango sorbet. we usually grab all whenever it's available. cause they are rarely on the rack.

During my first stay with Anne and family I saw how special the ice cream was for her and nephew and niece. Looking back, I feel bad about not being able to bring myself to eat the purple ice cream. I was just thinking it wouldn't go good with the San Migs and not being able to tolerate milk products as well anymore and especially in the heat. I now have a craving for it now and the halo halo!

a Difference i noticed...

In America, A dad jingles the car keys saying "who wants to go for ice cream?" then loads up the gang, and drives for some 15 to 30 minutes to the local drive-in for ice cream cones....

In Philippines, a dad asks who wants ice cream (or frozen milk), then sends one of the kids to go get for everyone from the local sari-sari (on credit)....and pays for it later on....

It wasn't that many years ago when store owners sold small items on credit in the US. In the 60's and early 70's the small grocery store in my home town would do that. Looking back further in US history, stores in rural communities sold on credit all the time, especially to farmers that only got paid at harvest time.

Today the creditor is usually a credit card company but many stores thrive on rent to own with very high interest rates. Have you ever had a Sears or JcPenny's card? I'm sure you could find an item in those stores that cost less than a couple ice cream treats and charge it to your store card.

Just sayin...

Haven't noticed the cookies, but the ice cream and golden mangoes just like the Philippines are available in my part of the Midwest, Minneapolis/St Paul area. The ice cream is at the only Filipino grocery in town and the mangoes are all over the Asian groceries when in season. And we really don't have a whole lot of Filipinos in Minnesota compared to other parts of the country.

Philippine Mangoes are different. There are mangoes in Asian stores but its quite different. My province is in Antique, Philippines and every mango season we had Guimaras mangoes, its way different from mangoes they're selling here which usually came from Mexico and Chile. I heard that they are only available in Hawaii and California, due to short supply. As for the Ube ice cream, its very seldom in the Filipino store, nothing sold here in St. Louis, MO.
