Hello, i have a simple question. I have a friend who is resident of the US and got married recently. he wants to bring his wife along, but someone told him he cant till he becomes a citizen. is this true or there is a special visa for his wife without being a citizen?

Yes.. He/she can file form I-130.. is longer though than a US citizen filing for a wife.. here's a short transcript from the form I-130.

2. If you are a lawful permanent resident of United States,

you may file this form for:

A. Your husband or wife;

He can file for his wife but it will take a long time for her to get her visa, it's faster if he becomes a US citizen. If he wants he can apply for her now and in the meantime get his US citizenship, once he becomes a US citizen he can upgrade his petition and make the process move faster.

how much longer is the process? do you know?

I have a similar situation, my friend is a Permanent Resident, he is getting married with his long time girlfriend next month. He can apply for I-130, and do the process but how much longer does it take compared to him being a U.S Citizen?

his GF has a son, not sure how that affects anything. He wants to bring the son also.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.

7-9 months for spouse of a USC. 2-3 years for a spouse of an LPR. If he becomes a citizen while the application is pending he can upgrade.
