Hello fellow members,

Just a quick question regarding the paperrwork/evidence I collected and still havin in my posession.

I married a US Citizen 3 years ago but unfotunately things took a turn for the worse and I am now divorced. I have got my 10 year greencard. I was recently going through my HUGE box of Visa paperwork and came across all my sponsors information, personal information that is. Also I still have the copies of all the packages I sent during the K1 process.

My question is, would it be an issue to destroy my ex wifes familys information that they passed on to help with the visa process? I feel as if I no longer need to have that kind of information in my posession. I certainly wouldnt want my information out there (even though I have no intention to do anything with it ) I just want to cover my back and be done with it.

Also, is it advisable to pretty much destroy everything, like the packages from the earlier stages of the process?

Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I would say no. Pack it up and put it away in the back of the closet. Sometime after you get citizenship you can destroy it if you want. Until then it could be useful. In fact I am just going to keep everything for a while myself even thogh Alla has citizenship now.

Many of us are in that position for other reasons where we would love to get rid of those old papers and bad memories and move on. But have to hang unto them for various reasons. In your case, may be in a position to prove "good faith" at that time.

I suppose you could if you are planning on returning to your home country, and never coming back, but then for some reason, still may need those documents.

The day after I got my new US passport I went through our safe and sorted through the old pkgs. I removed evidence like old bills, multiple copies of my Cdn passport, photo copies of our birth certs etc. I have the originals neatly filed and can make extra photo copies again if ever needed. I kept a lighter version of the pkgs we sent (K1, AOS, ROC) but removed any duplicates. I shredded everything that I removed and our safe is quite neat and empty now!

Because my 20 yr old daughter is applying for citizenship later this year I kept some relevant materials. But like my K1 xray from 5 yrs ago went out. Extra envelopes and extra passport sized pictures went out too (I always got 2 sets 'just in case')

I don;t really ahve a lot of family information so I didn't have to deal with that.
