You give a thoughtful suggestion but based on ignorance of the process. If you are not confident of your ability to handle a 2 page form, I strongly suggest you spend more time reading the guides here and asking questions and GET confident. The I-129f is such a small piece of the puzzle, you really need to educate yourself. Your family is going to be one of immigrants and that is a complicated process that involves a lot of things on a day to day basis. It is not filling out a form, writing a check and you're done. Not hardly.

With an immigrant you are going to run into problems daily not even related to immigration. Even the entire immigration process, much more than the I-129f, is realtively easy and a small part of your life compared to all the other things. Read the forums here abour drivers licenses, SS cards, school enrollment, insurance, bank accounts, buying property and cars, etc., and ultimately even the passport. You will be amazed at the incredible level of incompetence in government agencies not related to immigration. Because your case will ALWAYS be "different" You are not the normal case they do 500 of every day. This NEVER stops them from making things up as they go along. I have no idea when we reached this point where clerks were told to make sh*t up instead of ask for help, but we sure have! If you think USCIS is trouble it is only because you have no experience with the others yet.

If YOU do not know the laws and rules (and they are all there to read on the internet...google will be your best friend) then you will be jerked around and so will your family and you cannot bring a lawyer with you every time you need to perform some normal life function that you have taken for granted until now.

Just to apply for passports this week, we had to hack through THREE people at the passport office until we got one that understood what THEIR OWN GUIDE says about children of naturalized citizens under age 18. It is right there, in THEIR guide and they STILL Make stuff up! "We need the divorce decree and the order of sole custody for the child" NO YOU DO NOT!!!!!!!!! He is a US citizen, get him his passport! How do you KNOW that if they don't and YOU haven't studied it? How do you KNOW when to ask for a supervisor? How do you know when they are feeding you BS? I give you 10 to 1 your attorney does not know.

Recently here a member was told they "needed an extension" to the I-94 to get a drivers license. :o There IS NO "extension" to an I-94. We had no problems with Alla's SSN as a K-1 the day after she arrived, but when Sergey went WITH A GREEN CARD, AND a drivers license, they said "we need to have your visa" NO YOU DON'T!!!!!!!!!!! A supervisor resolved it.

VJ is an excellent site, use it to educate yourself, you are going to need it.

Very well said.

And to round it off; nothing resolves stupidity (on the side of a civil servant) faster than knowing the law and the rules of the game. It's all in black and white, it's all available and it is free.

If that fails, as my dad always says: Don't waste your time with the clowns, get to the owner of the circus, in this case a supervisor or manager of the office you are dealing with; they are usually there (exception do occur) because they can read and interpret, as oppose to some of the clowns at the front desk.

You might want to go to the VJ guides and read how to do it yourself. Why spend time researching lawyers instead of spending time educating yourself on a process that is going to be a major part of everything you do for the next four years (minimum)?

This process is like climbing a mountain and hiring an attorney to leave you alone after the first step with the rest of the mountain to climb is ridiculous.

Your father was right. Mine always said "there is nothing you can't fix with $700 or a .30-06" Not sure which I would use.

But I still don't know where this "make it up as you go along" attitude comes from. They are not trained to do that...are they? Whatever happened to "Hmmm, I never had this situation before, let me call a supervisor"

this gives the lawyer to something to worry about because it scratches their record on the bar association side. that is if successful. i would say it is the equivalent feeling of someone having a lawsuit on you. its more of an attack from a psychological point.

i totally agree with her... you can vent your frustration by educating yourself or haunt your bad lawyer.

i vent my waiting-frustration by calling uscis every day. last week i was feeling really down because i could have went sky diving with my wife at new jersey or have a dinner around columbus circle. :crying: at least i get my money worth it.

You're not getting it. The bar association is lawyers policing lawyers. Think about the fox in the henhouse.

$1800 isn't bad... compare to nyc is $5000 when i requested a quote. i thought it was just a $100 to get a lawyer to do paperwork in nyc. but they were advertising in chinese and picking on people that aren't capable of self-education. i figured they were targeting that population. but i just file on my own at the end.

You are thinking that lawyers that charge $1800 to $5000 to fill out three pages with information you give them are worried about their reputation? These are the snails eating the shark droppings on the bottom of the fish bowl. They are parasites and they do not even care about repeat business. If a person finished law school, passed the BAR and is doing I-129f forms, something is seriously wrong.

I am curious what the percentage of petition filers that use attorneys is compared to the percentage of AOS filers. I am guessing MUCH lower for AOS. By the time they get to AOS they have figured out a lawyer is a waste of money.

This whole oft-repeated topic is just goofy. LOOK at an I-129f. It is TWO PAGES, it is ALL personal information. Who needs an attorney for that? You have to provide him all the information and all the attachments. He probably charges you for postage also. Good grief.

I would imagine most people here have filled out a college admission application. They are MUCH harder, they require as much or more documentation, references etc. Who uses an attorney for THAT? (Oh ####### I hope I did not just create a whole new field for lawyers)The job application to work as a bagger at Pricechopper is THREE pages
