Has anyone else been in my shoes? I am soon to marry my boyfriend from India, IN India, then I will return to the US to complete the CR-1 process. Would love to hear from others who have done this. Thanks!!

My husband came down to India for our wedding, headed back three weeks later, and filed my petition.

Can you elaborate more on your experiences thus far with the process? We plan to marry in India, I will come home to the US while he stays in India until I get the Visa stuff through. Is this the right path for us to take? Looking for any and all advice. Thanks!!!!

It really depends on what you want to do. You don't have to come back to the U.S.; if you wanted to stay in India after you are married you could petition from there. If you wanted to get married in the U.S., you could petition for a K-1 and get married after it is approved.

i will be doing a court marriage with my girlfriend in india soon and then i will be filing papers for CR1/IR1 visa.

Awesome! We are going to marry in Mumbai this summer, probably June. Where and when are you marrying? My fiance is going to the marriage office tomorrow (Sat) to find out what we have to have and need to do to get married there because he is Indian and I am American. We're just trying to figure this all out.

Is there anyone here with a similar story to mind who has been successful? I'm looking for some optimistic advices and stories to help me and my fiance along. I am a white female living in the US and my fiance is a Punjabi Sikh living in Mumbai. We will marry in Mumbai and do a CR-1 after that. I look forward to hearing lots of stories!!!!

We're just trying to figure this all out.

Since you're American and your boyfriend is Indian, you'll have to get married under the Special Marriage Act. First off, you'll need to fix up an appointment with the US Consulate in Mumbai to get a No Objection Certificate for the wedding. The NOC is to prove that you do not have any existing marriages/you've never been married and are free to marry now. Armed with that, you'd go to the registrar/subregistrar's office and file your petition of intention to marry, wait the mandatory 30-day period, and then go ahead and sign the register and be officially married.

Once this is done, you go back to the US and file the I-130 for your husband along with the supporting documents.

Me: Irish/ Swiss citizen, and now naturalised US citizen. Husband: USC; twin babies born Feb 08 in Ireland and a daughter in Feb 2010 in Arkansas who are all joint Irish/ USC. Did DCF (IR1) in 6 weeks via the Dublin, Ireland embassy and now living in Arkansas.
