Hi friends,

It has been over a week, but haven't yet received the SSN. Should I contact to SSN department in Fl? or call them to check out whether my application is under process or not.

I know I have ticked the SSN option in DS-230.

Thank you!

The SSA will not issue you a SSN/card until the USCIS enters all of your POE info in their system which can take up to eight weeks.

Is there anyway to get it faster? Should I approach them in local office? I heard that alot of people on VJ got social security within 10 days.

This is not true, the SSA cannot issue a SSN until the USCIS has entered all the information in their system. My husband went through this and wasted a whole afternoon at the SSA office to see if he could get his number the day he went, which was two weeks after he arrived. We called the USCIS to find the status of his green card and we were told every time that it would take a few weeks to enter it in the system. As soon as he received his Welcome to America letter and his green card in the mail the SSA had his information in their system as well and he was issued a SSN.

Call the USCIS first to find out if everything has been entered in the system, if it has, then you can go to the SSA office to get your number.

This question comes up a zillion times on here.

Sometimes by checking the box on the form (ds 230) the SSN comes, sometimes it does not. After 10-14 BUSINESS days (you can try earlier, it is your time)head down to ur local SSN office and make an inquiry! Quite often they know nothing about you and ask you to submit a new SSN request----SO, be prepared and fill it our prior to going to the office--download at http://ssa.gov/ssnumber/ bring ID--ur passport and birth cert!! Thats what I have done and many other VJ members and quite often approx a week later ur SSN card arrives in the mail! I was told by the SSN desk lady, I could have come back in person (with ID) and she could have told me what my SSN # was(They can NOT tell you over the phone.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

If you wait for the 1 week after your POE, SSA office will have your information.

The requester need to take all necessary documents with him/her to SSA office.

Very rare, it does happens, the system are not updated. I never heard of it personally till now.

We just went thru the same thing.. My husband has been here just about a month now and still hadn't received his SS card. We went to the SS office a couple days ago and asked if he had been entered into the system. The lady typed in his info and said that they (USCIS) entered his info but didn't request his SS number. She ask my hubby a few questions and summited his SS application for us, and said he should get his card in about 10 days.
