Hi, first post of what I assume will be many here!

I am actually based in the UK, my American fiancee will be filing the petition for a K-1 very soon, however i'm doing a lot of the research.

As my fiancee is going to enroll into college soon, and makes just enough to cover her rent etc, she falls pretty drastically below the poverty line requirements, however, she has a lot of financial support from her well off God Mother, who will be my co-sponsor for my Visa Journey.

I tried to find similar topics, but really wanted to know, at what point does the co-sponsor need to be introduced into the equation?

When filing the K-1 petition, we wanted to include supporting letters from family and family friends to show their support and encouragement of our relationship, which would include my Fiancee's god mother, who would state that she would act as a co-sponsor and make sure I was supported in the US if I needed her assistance.

I have read that at the Visa interview at the US Embassy in London, I may be required to file or show the affadavit of support? This is the one part of the process I cannot find a definitive answer for. I don't know when exactly the co-sponsor needs to submit her i-134 or at least make her intention known?

There is no issue with me having a co-sponsor and being vouched for financially, I just want to make sure I have sufficient evidence of this at every stage I may possibly need it through my application.

Happy to have found such a helpful forum and resource!

Ok, just hang on. You'll receive instructions and a date for the interview. I134 will be forward to you, which you'll bring on your interview, among others paper work. I134 will be done on your behalf from her Godmother. Just be sure about poverty guide line. Relax. Good luck dude. :):) Viva Aston Villa, just kidding.

i-134 or other financial matters is not needed at filing i-129f (except to pay the fee to file). You will bring i-134 to consulate at time of interview.

Congrats on starting your journey!

You file the I-134 when you have your interview at the embassy. It's a wee while away. No financial info is needed until then.

When filing the I-129F, you only need to show proof that you have met your fiancee in the last 2 years. You do not show proof of financial support or letters from friends. Having said that, I do not know how you met or how often you have seen each other, if you lack other evidence then a letter from a family member who knows both of you and has been with you when you were together can't hurt. Things that others include are boarding passes, hotels receipts with names on them, proof that you were in the same place at the same time and some pictures to further show that you have met, things like engagement ring receipts, diplomas from the same college etc. My husband and I lived together in the UK before we filed so we included our lease and our degree certificates from the same uni, if you have ever lived together then include things like that also.

Best of luck!

Helen

Thanks for all the quick responses.

Me and my fiancee have spent a large amount of the time together both in the UK and the US, so we have a lot of evidence in things like boarding passes, passport stamps, photos, e-mails, theme park tickets etc.. So I guess supporting letters will not be needed. With the amount of evidence me and my fiancee have, I would be so frustrated to then get an RFE, however, no need to over-compensate I suppose!

I think you're right.

We only included 3 things: our lease, our degrees and a couple of pictures.

The relevance of your evidence matters way more than quantity!

We were approved in around 7 weeks with no RFE.

I hope you have a similar experience!!

(If I were you I'd give your fiancees god mother a copy of the I-134 form now so she can be prepared for the info she'll have to provide and also the I-864 since she'll have to file that with your AOS and that requires tax stuff and proof of assets etc.)

Like Helen has said... let the co-sponsor see the forms and read the instructions so she knows what it entails and what evidence she will need to gather

good luck

Thanks for the replies. I feel better about the financial side now.

For the couples who have done this process from the UK to the US, can I assume you didn't use an immigration lawyer?

From what I can see, with all of the help on this site, it isn't really needed, and I class myself to be competent within this area, as I have previously filed and qualified for a P1 Artist Visa when I performed with a band around the US.

Unless there's some unique circumstance that would require it, a lot of us have started this process without hiring a lawyer. If you don't have any kids, ex-wives, or any criminal convictions that would cause issues, you should be fine.
