i predict a 'oops, we do not have enough funds for the fandangled version but we are hiring jose's contractor services to put up this here bail wire that my cousin mike has from his failed biznes' fence for a few miles.

I'm thinking more of "see, it didn't work", which would be faulty and flawed since it will only cover a very small portion of the border.

That's why it needs to go from San Diego to the Gulf, along the whole length of the border.

LOL.

What's the point in putting up a fence when our government is on the precipice of inviting all the illegals with 'forgiveness' and 'amnesty' visas?

very wise words indeed.

I have always wondered why the unemployment and welfare system in the U.S. didnt force recipients to work! eg: community service, work in the fields, cleaning up trash, imagine how clean our cities would be!

Why shouldn't America protect it's borders??

Their arguments:

* It's not fair (Yes it is)

* It's racist (No it isn't)

* People just want to work (So do the rest of us)

* They're not taking jobs away from Americans (Yes they are)

* They're not hurting anyone (The hell they're not)

Etc., etc., etc.

* It's not fair (Yes it is) Who says it's not fair?

* It's racist (No it isn't) The fence isn't. But the sentiment of keeping the brown folks is.

* People just want to work (So do the rest of us) Except for the welfare lifers.

* They're not taking jobs away from Americans (Yes they are) Unemployment is at all time lows. Farmers are complaining of not having enough workers on hand. Remind me, whose jobs are they taking again?

* They're not hurting anyone (The hell they're not) I suppose the bad apples in the group have murdered/raped/mugged/stole/etc.. but the rest of them do their best not to harm any one. None of the 9/11 terrorist crossed that border.

* It's not fair (Yes it is) Who says it's not fair?

I've heard that argument before. I'm not saying that people here have made it.

* It's racist (No it isn't) The fence isn't. But the sentiment of keeping the brown folks is.

To me that isn't the point. I don't want illegals of any color or creed in the United States. Would it make it better if I supported a similar fence built on the Canadian border?

* People just want to work (So do the rest of us) Except for the welfare lifers.

Yeah, but they're a minority.

* They're not taking jobs away from Americans (Yes they are) Unemployment is at all time lows. Farmers are complaining of not having enough workers on hand. Remind me, whose jobs are they taking again?

That isn't what I've heard. I know a guy who runs a construction company in Texas and though he has Americans constantly asking him for work, he uses illegals because he can pay them only 40% of what he'd pay the Americans. Meat packing used to provide a good solid wage; now those plants are mainly staffed by illegals who are injured far more often on the job because their employers don't feel the need to provide them with safe working conditions since they won't complain anyway. Those are just a couple of examples.

* They're not hurting anyone (The hell they're not) I suppose the bad apples in the group have murdered/raped/mugged/stole/etc.. but the rest of them do their best not to harm any one. None of the 9/11 terrorist crossed that border.

When I say 'hurt' I am referring to how illegals drive down wages for blue-collar workers.

Funny you say that because Australia has exactly this of system..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

The wall does send out a rather UGLY message from our country. USA is CLOSED. I am actually surprised, given that everyone on this site is involved in immigration. Tell me, does Average Joe on the street distinguish between legal and illegal immigration? NOT REALLY! So what are we saying to the Average Joe's out there-IMMIGRANTS aren't welcome. The more anti-immigrant this country becomes, the worse we ALL are for it. And I agree, this isn't the America I knew and loved...putting a bandaid over such a critical issue and wasting time and money for it, while sending out an ugly message to the entire world, is shameful.

Oh stop it with the silliness. The wall doesn't mean the country is closed. It means it is now more difficult (slightly more difficult) to Enter Without Inspection.

Well, maybe that's how it looks to you...

And, just as Javier said, they'll still get here. They're still starving! Problem NOT solved... They risked their lives before, some dying to get here, they'll keep right on doing that until the problem gets solved.

That really is all it means. Most countries take measures to guard their borders against uninspected entry. It's normal and with plenty of precedent.

Put the hysteria aside. You can say the USA is "closed" when we reduce those visa quotas to '0' and shut down our ports of entries :P

The important thing to realize here is that their hunger and starvation is Mexico's problem. Not the United States. The US, by allowing that long land border to be as unguarded as it is, allowed Mexico to unload their problem on us. This wall/fence goes a small way (a very small way) towards putting the onus of solving the 'problem' back where it belongs - on Mexico.

Well I'm actually looking ahead to the Visa implications of this wall. Like I said, whenever the country takes on such an anti-immigrant attitude (remember, not all of us take time to distinguish legal vs. illegal) it hurts all of us.

And my response to that is....we brought it on ourselves! USA always makes such a grand show of sticking our noses all over and "HELPING" everyone. Why not help our friendly neighbors south of the border? They helped themselves, that's why. And our Statue of Liberty does say...Bring me your tired, your poor....etc. I guess some took that to heart! And believed it.

With inspection, not without.

It really is an easy distinction. I am disturbed by your inability to understand it.

I'm sorry, I don't recall seeing that particular vocabulary...must have missed that, I guess they did too. I am really disturbed that you seem to think I can't distinguish between legal and illegal. Ummm, are we not currently paying for my husband's previous ILLEGAL entry? Of all people, I know the difference.
