Translating passport

Hi guys,

I have received papers from fiance that were requested but am wondering what do I get translated. I have copies of his passport but am not sure what needs to be translated. Do I have to have the first pages and last page with text on them plus the identification page? How about the stamps, do they have to be translated as well? really confused, need help, quick!!!

What exactly was requested? Was a 'Translation' requested?

I have never heard of someone having to get their passport translated!?!

Aren't most passports in english and the official language of the country issuing the passport? I know Chinese passports are.

Yea - I also have never heard of a passport translation request. That's strange .... what did the RFE say?

And yes, Passports are printed in Native language AND English!

Oh wait - I think you're saying that you were sent documents that you will need in the process and you want to know if the passport will also need to be translated. The answer is no. My husband has a Dominican passport and I had him email me a scanned copy of the Bio page - it was acceptable. No translation needed. Only the Birth Certificate and Marriage Certificate - but since you aren't married yet, not a worry for you.

The English language is NOWHERE on the passport!!!

Word for word the RFE states: "Please submit copies of the beneficiary's (his name) passport, all pages(with or without stamps) including identification page."

I believe it is being used as evidence that we have met in person. He is a Haitian citizen who is a legal resident of Dominican Republic. The passport is to prove that he was in DR when we met as I stated in Question 18 on I-129F.

It is a Haitian passport in french/haitian creole. Some stamps are in spanish and some in french.

But at the top of RFE it states "All foreign documents must be submitted with complete word-for-word English translations. The translator must certify that the translation is complete and accurate, and that he or she is competent to translate. Do not submit the English translation without the foreign language document."

So I'm lost as to whether they want just the the first page and identification pages translated or should stamps be translated as well since they are in spanish and french(not english).?????

I think that the statement is just a general statement regarding the translation. If anything, just call them to verify they actually want you to translate his passport. Again, I did not translate my husbands.

A passport is considered a document. There are services via internet you can scan in passport, upload, and they will translate in 24 hours. This can be expensive. You could also photo copy each page, and have someone you know translate it word for word, page for page... and then have them submit a statement that they are fluent in both languages, capable of making such translation, and include their name and contact information. I would not need stamp of translation, only statement from translator.

Google it, why are there such services as Passport Translation Services, 24 hour turnaround? Seems to be a waste for a company to offer Passport Translation Services, if it's never been done before.

If I'm from a country that doesn't have English written on my passport, would I then have to get it translated every time I travel abroad?

I never said it would have to be translated for travel, did i? The RFE stated all foreign documents must be translated, Passport is a foreign document... think about it.? Did you google passport translation? There is plenty of reasons, including Department of States Requests, to have a passport translated. Why do you suppose these passport translation services are in business anyway?

Well, if the person in question needs it to get their K-1, then it is implied that the person would be translating for the purpose of travel.

ALL Passports have either FRENCH or ENGLISH written on them. This has been the case for YEARS. Why do this? So that One's passport is accepted THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. I'm not saying you're wrong, I am simply saying that it seems odd and that I have never heard of it.

Why do I suppose Passport Translation Services are in business? I dunno, people trying to convince people they need something, when they don't, in order to make money... 'You NEED this!' <--- What every TV commercial is telling it's viewers, without actually telling them. Simple, but effective!
