Hello,

Quick question for those who are filing "Married filing jointly". I am currently in D.R and I have my wife's passport. The embassy is located in santo domingo so of course we don't want to go all the way down there to make copies. Is it possible to just get it copied in Santiago with a lawyer? Also, I could bring her passport with me back to the states and have it copied and notarized at dominican consulate in my city, would this be a possiblity? Any imput would be appreciated. Thanks,

Matt

I actually just found my answer. Looks like we would have to go to Santo Domingo.

Do we really need it to get it notarized? We can't send the photocopy of it like how we sent it in the DS-230?

DS-230 applicants don't need passports notarized right?

reg.ula.tion.me.ooow.2011 // tomcat.fight

to do list:
file i-130, petition for alien relative
get immigrant visa
get ssn card and green card
get employment authorization - not required
file I-751, petition to remove the conditions of residence (before 2nd year expires upon entry)
become a US citizen

Thank you Visajourney!

If the notary office [where ever it is] is attached to a country that subscribes to, or is a Member of the Hague Convention, then yes - the notary seal will be accepted by the IRS.

Carlos' Wife - are you saying there's an IRS office in DR? IF SO - Matt1969 it may be less expensive to do some intake there, in person, face to face.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

As I have to go through this process (notarized copy or passport and other stuff) .... I am asking this (i hope it is not thread hijacking :D

1. Will IRS accept a notary from Malaysia (Hague convention country, listing here, but not a signatory of 1961 convention according to IRS) ? Or does my spouse needs to go to US Embassy and pay for notarization?

2. Same question for USCIS/NVC instead of IRS, if they will accept a Malaysia notary, for 'certified copies' of Marriage certificate, birth certificate etc, for RFE if that occurs.
