Priority Date Question

Hi everyone,

Quick question. On the official NOA1 (I-797) the part where it says "priority date", does that mean anything? For example, I received the NOA1 by email/text on the 17th of January, the I-797 on the 23th of January, but in it, my priority date is January 13. Does this mean that my case is considered part of the January 13 cases?

Yes. your case was entered in the system on that date. January 13 is your NOA1 date.

Does it mean anything else? No.

"Priority dates apply to people applying for visas through family members other than a US spouse or son/daughter over 21. Spouse visas don't need priority dates because they are immediately eligible for the visa, no need to wait, because there is no limit on the number of spouse visas that can be issued. But, for example, brother/sister of US citizen is subject to wait periods because there is a limit on how many of those visas can be issued per year. So in that category, you get a priority date, which basically means when your petition was filed, and the visas are issued in order of priority date. In some categories, like the brother/sister category for the Philippines, the wait currently exceeds 20 years for the priority date to become current and eligible for a visa"

for a USCitizen Petitioner, it mostly means nothing.

HOWEVER - when / if you call into USCIS, and talk with a Human -

ever so often they'll mention that CSC or VSC is working on I-130's for spousal visas with a priority date of XX/XX/XXXX

They do this, so that you'll have some idea of how far in the queue yer casefile has moved. Waiting is waiting, sure, but you'll get some sense of time and timing when/if a USCIS TeleOperator mentions a priority date. It's not all the time this is mentioned, but when/if it is - this gives you some idea of where you are in the queue.

Queues are important, ya? Yer in the First Long One, so far. There's others, later.
