I am upper middle class and my salary will not go up so all this minimum wage increase does it hurt me in the long run. It affects me more then it benefits them. So, now people with a high school education can get a 10 dollar an hour and some bachelors degree people start out at 14 dollars a hour like in social workers. This is just stupid. Where is the motivation to make people want to better themselves?

May 24, 2011 NOA1

How does the min. wage going up to $8.80 affect you in a negative way? And what does this have to do with motivating people to better themselves?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Where's your motivation? If you'd be motivated to better yourself, maybe you'd see an increase in your salary as well. But it's so much easier complaining about the bottom earners catching a tiny break than it would be to put in the effort to see a raise yourself, eh?

If you understood anything about economics, you'd know that minimum wage/continuing rise of such destroys an economy.

How so?

In a nutshell, it's because whenever the government sets the price on something (labor in this case), it interferes with a free market.

Besides, hardly anybody makes minimum wage. The only nominal benefit is to high school students working part time jobs - and it makes it just a bit harder for their employers to keep them around. So, some of them will lose their jobs.

If the only ones affected by min. wage are high school kids and the employers who employ these kids I don't see it making that much of an impact. On the other hand it's the year 2011, and if an $8.80 wage is too much to pay by an employer something is wrong. I was making $10 an hour when I was in high school and that was back in the early 80's.

The only short term benefit is for part timers like HS kids for any given increase. Long term, however, if the rates keep creeping up, and do so more frequently, it does start pushing up everybody's wages. Sounds great, until you realize prices go up and/or employment goes down.

Of course the real killer to employment in this country, and moreso in others, is all the employment law and regulations. It's damned near impossible to get rid of poor performers or leeches, so it makes employers very leery before they take someone on. Minimum wage is just a small part of the equation.

United States Economics are like this.

The increase will not help our Economy. As we sit here today on this topic Our President is on a 4 MILLION DOLLAR Vacation. And no a Dime comes out of Pocket.

The increase will mean you are taxed. To some it will not affect at all and The Food Stamp Program will adjust the cost of living as well. Thus, more money to welfare benefits. THIS IS WHY WERE LOSING.. The Answer is not in raising the wage to low income people. The Answer is OUR GOVERMENT and how we have accepted this behavior for years and look where we are.

Small business can not afford all this politicle bullshit. Big Companies use every tax loophole posible to evade this as well and is legal. No healthcare to employees because they keep them part-time. SHOP WALMART AND SAVE.

Giving a 30 cent raise is not the answer. The answer is our Goverment to fix this. but, they won't until China Owns the USA . That may soon come. Rome ruled for 500 Years. The US does'nt even have 250 years yet.

China won't own the US. They're actually further up the creek than we are. If you owe me 10 dollars, you have a problem. If you owe me hundreds of billions, actually I have the problem. That's the case with China. It doesn't mean we shouldn't call them out on currency manipulation and unfair trade practices, and we should of course remain vigilant, but they're in a worse place and despite their occasional chest thumping, they know it better than the US general public.

If you understood anything about economics, you'd know that minimum wage/continuing rise of such destroys an economy.

Is that a fact? So, if the minimum wage were to decline, then our economy would be humping, yes? Odd, then, that that's not exactly what's been happening. While in nominal terms the minimum wage has indeed increased from $0.25 when it was first introduced to $7.25 today, in real terms, the minimum wage was at it's highest level in 1968 (>$10.00 in 2010 dollars). The minimum wage increased from roughly $4.00 (in 2010 dollars) in 1938 to more than $10.00 (in 2010 dollars) in 1968 to then decrease to $7.25 in 2010. Was the economy being destroyed between 1938 and 1968 to then recover from 1968 onward? Yeah, I didn't think so.
